The Legal Service Division’s Civil Litigation Team operates in Edmonton and Calgary. It handles all types of civil litigation by and against the Government of Alberta except aboriginal law and constitutional matters. One of its clients is the Civil Forfeiture Office (CFO) within the Department of Public Safety and Emergency Services.
Civil Litigation is looking for an **Assistant Director to lead delivery of litigation services to the CFO** in accordance with the Civil Forfeiture Act. Civil forfeiture is an increasingly complex practice area, involving Charter issues and rapidly evolving case law from across Canada. The CFO is experiencing an increase in complex police referrals. Many involve drug trafficking by sophisticated criminal organizations, money laundering and other financial crimes, and assets such as bank accounts and real estate purchased with drug proceeds. CFO is also increasingly involved in interprovincial referrals, where property associated with a crime is located in two or more provinces, requiring collaboration among the provincial CFOs, litigation lawyers, and the referring police agencies.
Reporting to a Director of Civil Litigation, the Assistant Director - Civil Forfeiture will deliver senior litigation services to the CFO by handling civil forfeiture files, leading a group of lawyers and paralegals providing litigation services to the CFO (the Civil Forfeiture Practice Group), and serving as CFO client relationship manager. The Assistant Director - Civil Forfeiture will also support the Directors of Civil Litigation with a variety of management/administration duties as required.
Responsibilities of this position will include but not limited to:
- supporting the recruiting, hiring, onboarding, and supervising of lawyers who provide litigation services to the CFO (CFO lawyers)
- overseeing the work of paralegals
- assigning files to CFO lawyers and serving as lead counsel on the most complex assignments
- overseeing file assignments and practice management for CFO lawyers and assisting in finding solutions if capacity and resource issues arise
- accountability for meeting the Civil Forfeiture Practice Group’s service delivery commitment to the CFO
- regular communications with the CFO Director and other CFO personnel
- maintaining current knowledge of the relevant law and court procedures
- teaching, mentoring, and coaching Civil Forfeiture Practice Group members
- succession planning to ensure continued and ongoing service delivery to the CFO
- drafting briefing notes and other required reporting, including high priority and urgent requests on legal and non-legal issues and sensitive litigation
- managing outside counsel matters
**Role Responsibilities Continued**:
The Assistant Director - Civil Forfeiture will also be required to:
- support the Civil Litigation Directors with general team operations including team meetings and morale building activities
- act for the Civil Litigation Directors as needed
- carry out other responsibilities as assigned by the Civil Litigation Directors

**Qualifications**:
It is required to have a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (JD) degree.
You must be an active member or must have immediate eligibility for full membership with the Law Society of Alberta.
For Law degrees obtained outside Canada, proof of accreditation from the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) is required.
