Student Personal Support Worker

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has openings for Personal Support Worker students to work at Riverview Gardens Long-Term Care Home for the summer of 2025.
**Job description**
The PSW students will assist residents. This position will be covering on call and vacation relief only, working weekends and shift work. Hours may be up to 37.5 hours per week.

**Essential qualifications**
- To qualify for this summer student position, students must currently be enrolled in post-secondary school full-time for the 2024/2025 winter term (normally ending April, May or June) and returning to post-secondary school full-time in the 2025 fall term (normally starting in August or September)
- Must be currently a student in a post-secondary RN or RPN program
- Should have physical strength and ability to withstand long periods of standing, walking and frequent bending on a daily basis
- Possess ability to work independently, and as a member of a team
- Work or volunteer experience in a Long-Term Care facility preferred
- Knowledge of or experience assisting others with activities of daily living (meals, baths, personal hygiene, etc.)
- Knowledge of or experience with RAI-MDS charting and PCC (PointClickCare)
- Strong computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) (or similar software program)
**Certifications, memberships, licenses**
- First Aid/CPR preferred
**Work environment/hours of work**
- This position works mostly indoors
- This position will work weekday hours, afternoon hours, evening hours, midnight hours, weekend hours (up to 37.5 hours)
- This position is call-in and may have scheduled shifts, and may have short notice call-in hours for weekdays, afternoon hours, evening hours, midnight hours, and weekend hours, which may include 4 hour shifts.
**COVID-19 Vaccination**
The Municipality of Chatham-Kent no longer requires a COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment. Although it is not mandatory to be vaccinated, it is highly encouraged.
**Background check requirements**
This position works with vulnerable residents in a position of trust and authority, on a sustained and regular basis, in a largely unsupervised capacity. A Vulnerable Sector Screen is required (Fixing Long-Term Care Act section 252 O. Reg. 246/22) prior to being accepted for employment. You must be 18 years of age or older to obtain a vulnerable police check.
All staff members shall promptly provide the employer with a signed declaration disclosing new charges, convictions, orders and restraining orders, consistent with Ontario Regulation section 253 O. Reg 246/22 made under the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, with respect to the period since the date the person’s last criminal reference check under subsection (2) was conducted.
**Essential physical and/or safety requirements**
- 2 step TB skin test to be completed within two weeks of starting position
- Walking: frequent balancing; constant walking on level surface (up to 28.6 kgs or 63 lbs) (porters residents back and forth to dining room at meal times and to resident activities; obtains and distributes supplies used on the nursing units; participates in indoor/outdoor resident activities)
- Standing: constant standing inside (up to 4.55 kgs or 10 lbs) (assists residents with hygiene, grooming, toileting and dressing; participates in indoor/outdoor resident activities)
