The Health & Safety Environmental Specialist role is a position where you will have the opportunity to gain invaluable safety experience, contributing to the growth and success of Kohler Canada Co. Reporting to the Plant Manager, you will develop, implement, and maintain safety programs designed to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control workplace safety hazards for the Armstrong facility. Provide assistance to all areas to achieve compliance with regulatory agencies in order to minimize safety hazards while promoting a safe and healthy work environment. As a COR certified facility you will ensure the safety program continues to grow and develop using best practice benchmarks of internal sister and other facilities. This role is also responsible for environmental compliance and testing, with support from Kohler’s corporate environmental team. **Specific Responsibilities**:
- Manage activities of the safety committee and safety teams, safety audits, accident investigations, ergonomic improvement projects, workers compensation case management, oversee the light duty program, emergency response planning, and safety and environmental training.
- Act as medical case manager and return to work coordinator for all WorkSafeBC cases.
- Bring leadership to modified duty program and support associates currently in the program.
- Coordinate safety compliance; maintain a comprehensive understanding of corporate policies and government regulations.
- Coordinate/conduct and document health, safety and environmental training programs. This includes safety orientation for all new/transfer associates. Review and revise as needed the health and safety program annually.
- Organize and complete required Industrial Hygiene monitoring and requirements.
- Coordinate training and communication activities to build management and employee understanding of and commitment to safety goals.
- Plan, implement and monitor accident prevention and loss control programs to minimize injuries, and the costs associated with those injuries. Conduct incident/accident investigations to identify root causes and to identify opportunities for accident prevention.
- Champion on-going ergonomic improvement projects. Provide project management related to ergonomic improvements, workstation layout, and correction of unsafe working conditions.
- Oversee WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System), including coordinating annual chemical inventory listings and maintenance of MSDS’s. Develop and maintain a comprehensive understanding of the effects of hazardous conditions and unsafe acts on employees.
- Compile monthly safety reports, including analysis of incidents, injuries and illness including but not limited to frequency, causation, severity and costs. Maintain and coordinate records of employee safety training.
- Ensure required emergency response planning has been conducted and implemented.
- In conjunction with corporate EHS (Environmental Health & Safety), coordinate exposure monitoring schedules. Act as plant liaison to production supervision and personnel for exposure monitoring results, recommendations, and control strategies.
- Coordinate and conduct respirator fit testing/training activities annually and for new/transfer associates.
- Obtain and distribute safety related promotional material (i.e. posters, check stuffers and mailings) within the plant.
- Coordinate training in the following areas: WHMIS, Lift Truck Certification, Confined Space - Entry, Fire Extinguisher Training, and Emergency Action Plan.
- Coordinate the first-aid personnel responsibilities.
- Acts as team member/co-leader and liaison for the Armstrong plant in Kohler environmental and sustainability initiatives. Coordinate the requirements, reporting, testing and disposal of materials.
- Other duties as assigned including participation and facilitation of Kaizen events.
**Organizational Relationships**:
Frequent contact with hourly employees, supervision and management within the Armstrong facility regarding safety and health impact of operations and planned changes.
Frequent contact with engineering and maintenance when performing safety audits, accident investigations, reviewing recommendations and designing means of abatement.
Frequent contact with Human Resources, working together to ensure gracious experiences through EHS initiatives and programs. Human Resources will act as partner and support in claims management.
Frequent contact with corporate EHS group including other Kohler facilities.
**External Business Relationships**:
Occasional contact with contractors, vendors, consultants, and regulatory agencies.
