Personal SUPPORT WORKER needed
I live in an apartment in the Renfrew-Collingwood area in Vancouver - close to the Joyce Sky Train Station. The apartment has two bedrooms and a full kitchen. I live by myself and do not have any pets.
I am a 24 year old man. I am a writer and an artist. I love music. I have taken some university classes in the past, and I am always learning. Soon I will continue my educational endeavors. I am a geek sometimes - I have technology all over my home. I have a chilled and quirky personality. Past workers have enjoyed working with me and found the job rewarding.
I have Cerebral Palsy. I am unable to verbally speak, and rely on my power wheelchair to get around. I use devices with programmed voices for communication. I have profound hearing loss.
Although my physical needs require that I need lots of help, I am very independent and find ways to enjoy my life and do things in the community many others like me would not consider possible.
I have changed my support schedule to a 24 hour time slot, and so I am looking to fill either 1 full time or 2 part time positions. The shift begins at 7 am, and ends at 7 am the following day. I would like to alternate the staff; and so the shifts would be 1 day on - 1 day off. However, I am happy to be flexible on the exact days on/off.
For example
- Worker A would work:
Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays
Worker B would work:
Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
Should you be interested in working more than 3 days per week, I would be happy to discuss further with you. I am aware the shifts can be intensive, and so it may be exhausting to work several days in a row.
I need most help with my morning and bedtime routine. You will sleep through the night in a separate room, and assist me should I wake up to use the bathroom. Once I am in my wheelchair for the day, I am independent. I am tube fed and eat real food blended and so there is meal preparation required daily. I will need my tube feeding pumps monitored throughout the day at times, but generally the day time hours are less intensive. In the evenings, I have a shower before bed, and the physical support tasks increase. The shifts work well with someone who can pay attention to details and multi-task. But please note that these shifts can be intensive, so patience is vital. There would be some “down-time” for the worker in the afternoons, but I need you to be present in my home should I have something unexpected happen.
The skills and knowledge required would be for:
- Personal care: shower and other routines
- Assisting with hygiene
- Physical therapy
- Assistance with the activities of daily routine
- Communicating with a non-verbal person
- Transfer: using sling/lift
- G tube feeding
- Food preparation for G tube feeding
- Light Housekeeping
- Occasional accompanying to appointments or other errands
- Ability to drive a wheelchair enabled personal van is an asset
- Grocery shopping
For the training process, you would watch another worker do the shifts for a few times. Then you would start doing the tasks by yourself with the other worker’s guidance until you are confident.
