Child Wellness Navigator

**Position Summary**:
Reporting to the Child Wellness Team Leader, the Child Wellness Navigator is responsible for working collaboratively with families in our Member Communities to ensure that children receive educational, developmental, social, mental health, recreational, and cultural support and resources required for healthy development into adolescence, including a specialized focus on Indigenous children and young people with special needs. The Child Wellness Navigator recognizes the impacts of systemic racism and intergenerational trauma on children and families, and how it impacts child development, behaviour, wellness, and relationships, and incorporates syilx and nłeʔkepmx language and culture into culturally appropriate services.
As a member of the SCFSS organization, the Child Wellness Navigator is committed to the collective response to the Call to Action through the four Strategic Directions and supports a pathway of change to exercise nłeʔkepmx and syilx inherent rights. In particular, the Child Wellness Navigator champions core elements of the strategic goal of ‘Protection to Prevention’.
**Overview of Duties and Responsibilities**
- Integrate the nłeʔkepmx Framework of Practice and the syilx Child and Family Plan into support services for children and families
- Plan, develop, and facilitate culturally grounded events, programs, and services that promote personal growth and wellness in young people
- Conduct needs assessments, identify service gaps, and develop priorities to address developmental needs of children, families, and communities
- Ensure services meet contractual, cultural, legislative, and professional standards
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to deliver integrated and effective services
- Complete safety assessments, risk evaluations, and risk-reduction plans
- Accept and manage referrals from SCFSS staff, community partners, and families
- Maintain accurate, confidential client records in accordance with AOPSI and FOIPPA standards
- Collaborate with external agencies to deliver coordinated program services
- Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) policies and SCFSS procedures
- Integrate the nłeʔkepmx Framework of Practice and the syilx Child and Family Plan into all youth support services.
- Participate in regular supervision, including annual performance evaluations and work plan reviews with the Child Wellness Team Leader.
- Collaborate with Resident Elders and Knowledge Keepers to ethically document and integrate traditional teachings into services
**Job Requirements**
- Clear Criminal Record check and Ministry of Child and Family Development Prior Contact Check required before commencement of employment.
- Valid Class 5 BC driver’s license without restrictions.
**Education and Experience**
- Degree or Diploma in Early Childhood Education, Child and Youth Care, Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, or in an area relevant to the work performed. A combination of training and experience will be considered.
- Minimum two years of experience working with Indigenous youth, families, or communities in a planning, engagement, or support capacity.
- Minimum one year of experience in developing and facilitating support services, programs, and workshops for individuals or families.
- Demonstrated understanding of Indigenous culture, reconciliation, and community partnerships, with a commitment to culturally safe and trauma-informed practices.
- Working knowledge of nłeʔkepmx and syilx language, culture, and traditional protocols is a strong asset.
**Minimum Required Competencies**
- **Indigenous Knowledge**: working knowledge or willingness to learn nłeʔkepmx and syilx culture and language; sensitivity to the historical and systemic impacts on Indigenous families and communities from intergenerational trauma due to colonialism, residential school history, the sixties scoop, and association with the child welfare system
- **Critical Thinking**: analytical, methodical, fact-based decision-making, creative problem solving, and considers different perspectives
- **Communication**: facilitation and presentation skills, professional business writing, clear and confident communication with a variety of audiences
- **Motivation**: self-motivated, can motivate others effectively, high productivity
- **Technology**: intermediate skills in Microsoft Office and other IT platforms for word processing, reporting, database navigation, and communication
- **Time Management**: organized, prioritizes tasks, manages deadlines, delegates responsibilities, and coordinates simultaneous tasks to accomplish goals
- **Conflict Resolution**: anticipates, diffuses, and resolves disagreements, confrontations, tensions, and complaints; fosters a positive and cohesive work environment
Pay: $33.21-$42.18 per hour
