The Youth Wellness Navigator is responsible for providing individualized support services to youth. They work collaboratively with youth to set goals across all areas of life and relationships, identify a support network to help achieve those goals, and implement healthy strategies for success. The Youth Wellness Navigator assists youth in accessing educational, employment, social, mental health, recreational, and cultural opportunities. They recognize the impacts of systemic racism and intergenerational trauma on youth, particularly how these factors affect wellness and relationships and may contribute to at-risk situations. The Youth Wellness Navigator incorporates syilx and nłeʔkepmx language and culture into culturally appropriate services to enhance youth relationships and overall wellness within the nłeʔkepmx and syilx communities.
**OVERVIEW OF DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Provide one-on-one preventative support services to youth aged 13-18, promoting holistic wellness and striving to preserve family and cultural connections.
- Maintain and strengthen connections between youth, their extended families, communities, cultures, and traditions.
- Deliver education on mental health, substance use, self-care, healthy coping strategies, and effective communication skills.
- Collaborate with family members and support teams (including Elders, counsellors, social workers, and health programs) to implement action plans tailored to each youth’s needs.
- Coordinate and collaborate with community resources to enhance service delivery and strengthen partnerships that support family and cultural preservation.
- Engage in regular consultation with Resident Elders to support both individual youth and program development.
- Ensure all practices are culturally safe, trauma-informed, and reflective of the intergenerational impacts experienced by Indigenous youth, in alignment with syilx and nłeʔkepmx traditions.
- Meet all reporting requirements for the Youth Team Leader, funding bodies, and relevant agencies, ensuring timely and accurate documentation.
- Develop, monitor, and update an annual Personal Development Plan aligned with SCFSS’s strategic priorities.
- Integrate the nłeʔkepmx Framework of Practice and the syilx Child and Family Plan into all youth support services.
- Participate in regular supervision, including annual performance evaluations and work plan reviews with the Youth Team Leader.
**JOB REQUIREMENTS**
- Clear Criminal Record check and Ministry of Child and Family Development Prior Contact Check required before commencement of employment.
- Valid Class 5 BC driver’s license without restrictions.
**EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE**
- Post-secondary degree in Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, Community Development, or a related field. A combination of relevant education and experience will be considered.
- Minimum two years of experience working with Indigenous youth, families, or communities in a planning, engagement, or support capacity.
- At least one year of experience providing direct support to at-risk youth or vulnerable populations.
- Demonstrated understanding of Indigenous culture, reconciliation, and community partnerships, with a commitment to culturally safe and trauma-informed practices.
- Working knowledge of nłeʔkepmx and syilx language, culture, and traditional protocols is a strong asset.
**MINIMUM REQUIRED COMPETENCIES**
- **Indigenous Knowledge**: working knowledge or willingness to learn nłeʔkepmx and syilx culture and language; sensitivity to the historical and systemic impacts on Indigenous families and communities from intergenerational trauma due to colonialism, residential school history, the sixties scoop, and association with the child welfare system
- **Critical Thinking**: analytical, methodical, fact-based decision-making, creative problem solving, and considers different perspectives
- **Communication**: facilitation and presentation skills, professional business writing, clear and confident communication with a variety of audiences
- **Motivation**: self-motivated, can motivate others effectively, high productivity
- **Technology**: intermediate skills in Microsoft Office and other IT platforms for word processing, reporting, database navigation, and communication
- **Time Management**: organized, prioritizes tasks, manages deadlines, delegates responsibilities, and coordinates simultaneous tasks to accomplish goals
- **Conflict Resolution**: anticipates, diffuses, and resolves disagreements, confrontations, tensions, and complaints; fosters a positive and cohesive work environment
