Reports to: This position reports to the Chef, Food Services Manager. Creatively and conscientiously prepare fresh meals which are nutritious, delicious, and attractively presented. Maintaining Health and Safety regulations associated with food handling and preparation.
Key Purposes:
To uphold and enrich with excellence, The Alexander’s commitment to:
- Provide a kind and nurturing home where Residents feel valued and loved and the Resident’s families have full confidence and trust in the care their loved one is receiving.
- Be excellent in demonstrating the conduct and fulfilling the expectations of an Associate of The Alexander, as stated in the Associates’ Handbook.
- Works with every member of The Alexander team to ensure the highest level of service is provided to Residents of The Alexander and their families.
Key Responsibilities:
- Report to person in charge to receive necessary information and updates, inclusive of reading Communication Book.
- Greet and engage Residents, family members and friends when they visit.
- Ensure meals compliment and support the Resident’s nutritional needs and medical condition, further to the assessment of those needs and the direction given by a Doctor/Nurse Practitioner, the Director of Wellness or designate.
- Uphold and implement dietary ‘likes and dislikes’ as well as specialized dietary requirements of each Resident.
- Know and adhere to the stated menu, based upon a rotational plan.
- Maintain and care for all food service storage areas and equipment.
- Receive, stock, and shelve pertinent deliveries of food service goods, inclusive of the proper removal/disposal of all delivery materials and packaging.
- Purchase food only with the consent of the Chef Food Services Manager.
- Consistently check the quality of raw, prepared, and cooked food products to ensure The Alexander’s standards are met.
- Know and be compliant with prevailing health standards and regulations, inclusive of food and refrigeration temperatures and all pertinent sanitation and safety requirements.
- Run dishwasher as necessary.
- Clean and tidy all food service preparation as needed areas, i.e., sweep, mop, wipe, sanitize.
- Serve meals for Independent Living, Assisted Living and Memory Care residents
- Prepare and serve meals (depending on shift a combination of breakfast, lunch, dinner)
- Prepare foods in advance as requested by the chef: soups, baked goods, salads, etc.
- Ensure all meals are plated attractively and appropriately.
- Care for and properly store all cooking pots and pans, utensils etc.
- Conduct other duties as assigned.
All aspects of the daily routine should be appropriately shared between the Associates working. Teamwork and communication are essential, imperative components of our environment.
Key Attributes and Qualifications:
To be successful as a Cook at the Alexander, an individual must have the following combination of attributes and qualifications:
- Ability to adapt to frequently changing and challenging situations.
- Personal resilience and resolve.
- Experience preparing specialized diets as well as food consistency, including mince, puree and thickened, as per an SLP or doctor’s Orders.
- Appropriate experience and/or equivalent qualification as a cook.
- Consistent ability to respect and positively contribute to a multi-disciplinary, multi-task team environment.
- A current clean Criminal Record/Police Check; Vulnerable Persons.
- A current TB test.
- Proof of COVID vaccine 1 and 2, boosters are a bonus but not required.
- Current CPR, Food Handler Certifications.
- Must be available to work days, evenings, weekends, holidays
- Member of the Joint Health & Safety Committee and MSDS training.
- Adhere to Health & Safety policies and regulations.
- Attend training courses as and when required.
Physical Demands:
- Standing for extended periods of time at food preparation tables
- Walking short distances and maneuvering in tight spaces within kitchen and dining room environments.
- Pulling/pushing/lifting dishracks, food carts, bulk food items, etc., up to 50lbs.
- Reaching and lifting food items and kitchen tools from and to upper shelving up to 10lbs - at times with use of an 18inch to 3ft stepping ladder.
- Ability to complete repetitive arm motions for periods of up to 1hr while peeling, chopping, and preparing food
