**LOCATION**:All JHSYR offices (virtually and in-person)
**SALARY**: $51,904 per Annum
John Howard Society of York Region (JHSYR) is a non-profit, charitable organization serving residents of the York Region. The organization works with individuals involved in any stage of criminal justice involvement and their families.
The primary function of this position will be supporting individuals 16 and over and their families who have experienced incarceration and/or mental health issues with family reunification and connection with community support. Furthermore, FAIR Chances will provide preventative and educative programming to communities with a focus on newcomers and BIPOC communities.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
- Conduct intake assessments and needs assessments with clients.
- Communicate with clients regarding program requirements.
- Maintain ongoing case management appointments and follow-up calls with clients.
- Facilitate group programming and workshops to individuals enrolled in the FAIR Chances program.
- Prepare materials for group or individual sessions.
- Conduct 1:1 sessions with the client to support them with social and emotional learning, and coping skills, as directed by program Manager.
- Maintain partnerships with community agencies such as welcome centres, libraries, community centres, drop-in centres etc., and engage in collaboration and partnership development, as directed by the Program Manager
- Complete statistical data collection, and client intake statistics
- Ensure that services delivered are efficient and effective through evaluation techniques.
- Monitor completion of counselling requirements
- Maintain membership on committees and working groups, as directed by the Program Manager
- Adhere to directives and program standards of the John Howard Society of York Region
- Engage in continuous learning as directed by the Program Manager
- Maintain and respect professional boundaries with clients and colleagues.
- Exercise a flexible, non-judgmental, anti-racist, and anti-oppressive understanding and approach to people and work.
- Attend staff and team
- Accommodate day and evening hours.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Post-Secondary education in a related field (i.e. Social Work, Criminology, Addictions and Mental Health, etc.), or an equivalent combination of education and practical experience
- Membership with a relevant college/ registering body is considered an asset.
- Direct care experience working with adults with substance use and mental health issues.
- Experience with group facilitation
- Fluid in speaking a second language (preferred languages based on the demographic served are Mandarin, Farsi, Cantonese, Tamil, and Russian).
- Experience working with criminal justice involved individual and their families, with an understanding of the barriers and precipitating factors leading to criminal justice.
- Lived experience of involvement with the criminal justice involvement, welfare involvement, substance use, the mental health system and/or homelessness is an asset.
- Professional demeanour with strong rapport and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to actively listen and provide an empathetic approach to client interaction.
- Understanding and comprehension of internal criminal justice system mechanisms and their outcomes and complex criminogenic risks and needs facing people involved with the criminal justice system is considered.
- Ability to maintain relationships with community agencies and stakeholders.
- Strong administrative and organizational skills and abilities
- Knowledge of community resources throughout York Region with the ability to seek out new community resources as needed.
- Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques
- Approach work through a trauma-informed and client-centered lens
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and online meeting platforms
- Ability to work with diverse populations and communities with an awareness of barriers, needs, and York Region resources.
- Strong administrative, organizational and time management skills
- Access to a vehicle is preferred.
