To support us on our journey, Sinai Health System is looking for a **Mental Health Clinician** to support our **Psychiatry Emergency Service** in the **Department of Psychiatry** at our **Mount Sinai Hospital** Campus.

As a member of a new and growing Psychiatry Emergency Service, the Mental Health Clinician will work with the inter-professional team including, Physicians, Advanced Practice Clinicians, Nurses and Allied Health Discipline Professionals to support patients with mental illness and substance use disorders presenting in the Emergency Department (ED) and to a NEW Emergency Aftercare Service. The Mental Health Clinician, will have a specialty based focus in mental health and addictions care, crisis assessment, intervention and management, as well as skills including: counselling, safety planning, and resource navigation.

**Position Summary**:

- Providing triage, consultation, direct assessment, crisis intervention, counselling and disposition planning for patients with mental health and addictions challenges in the ED environment.
- Demonstrates strong crisis intervention skills including violence and suicide risk assessment and safety planning
- Utilizes and demonstrates a comprehensive theoretical knowledge base and clinical competence in caring for patients with psychiatric illness and addictions challenges
- Promotes and supports the maintenance of safe patient care in a work environment that encompasses a trauma-informed care approach
- Delivers patient and family centered care with an emphasis on assessment, education, prevention, harm reduction and restoration of health in a supportive and culturally sensitive manner
- Adapts approach to meet the demands and needs of constantly changing conditions, situations and people
- Utilizes comprehensive knowledge of community mental health and addictions networks to assist with system navigation and to facilitate linkages and referrals to community and hospital programs across a broad range of sectors to support disposition planning
- Acts as a resource consultant to assist ED physicians and nursing staff to ensure excellence in patient care
- Works in outpatient post ED care clinic, providing time limited resource navigation, counselling and ongoing safety assessments
- Participates in ongoing professional development activities, and engages in reciprocal relationships of learning with colleagues to stay current in the field
- Supports the achievement of departmental goals
- Perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.
- Job Requirements- Successful completion of a Bachelor of Nursing OR Successful completion of a Master’s Degree in a health-related discipline, including Social Work, Occupational Therapy or other relevant equivalent education
- Current member in good standing with a regulated health professional college
- Minimum 3 years of recent and related experience with emphasis in mental health and addictions
- Knowledge of psychiatric disorders, crisis intervention skills, support for addiction issues, interventions for severe and persistent mental illness
- Knowledge of the Ontario Mental Health Act, mental health reform principles, the Substitute Decisions Act, the Health Care Consent Act and PHIPA requirements
- Ability to foster collaborative working relationships with patients/families, inter-professional team members and internal and community stakeholders
- Ability to utilize information technology
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal and customer services skills
- Excellent organizational, communication, time management and interpersonal skills, along with ability to work effectively as a team member in a dynamic, inter-professional environment
- Ability to adapt to a changing work environment
- Demonstrated decision making, problem recognition, problem solving skills, negotiation and conflict resolution skills
- Demonstrated commitment to collaborative practice
- Ability to work effectively independently and under high pressure conditions
- Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance history
