**Job Summary**:
The Intellectual Property and Commercialization Officer under direction the Executive Director, Office of Research Services and will promote and develop the research communities’ awareness and understanding of the Ontario Tech University policies and procedures for intellectual property and will assist researchers in the development of commercialization and knowledge mobilization opportunities. The position will be responsible for assisting with the facilitation and coordination of patenting, negotiation of agreements involving intellectual property rights, monitoring such agreements for compliance and facilitating research partnerships that will result in the development of Intellectual Property. The incumbent will undertake a range of activities related to the receipt, analysis, statutory protection, and transfer of discoveries to third parties and provide guidance on these processes to researchers, legal counsel and other administrative units within the Ontario Tech University.

**Responsibilities include**:

- Supporting the commercialization and mobilization of Intellectual Property created at the University.
- Managing and executing the protection of Intellectual Property created at the University.
- Building relationships and working closely with professors, staff and graduate students engaged in research.
- Educating, advising and supporting the research community on matters pertaining to intellectual property and commercialization.
- Developing, presenting and/or coordinating workshops and/or lectures on intellectual property and commercialization.
- Assisting with the development scopes of work, research programs that involve commercialization plans.
- Developing and maintaining a process for assessing intellectual property and advising the Office of the Research Services and the broader Office of the Vice-President Research and Innovation.
- Coordinating and maintaining data and records related to the university’s intellectual property portfolio.
- Facilitating the development of appropriate commercialization strategies for intellectual property, including identifying prospective licensees through the use of information bases, discussions with inventors, and contacts obtained through industry affiliation.
- Supporting the implementation of the provincial Commercialization Mandate Policy Framework (CMPF) and ensuring compliance, including annual reporting, etc.
- Assisting with the negotiation and execution of contracts, as appropriate and required.
Developing and managing research partnerships with industry and not-for-profit organizations.
- Performing related duties as assigned.

**Education**:

- 4 year University degree required
- Master’s degree in business, science, engineering or related field strongly preferred
- 5-7 years of experience in intellectual property protection and commercializing technology.
- Certified Licensing Professional or other IP related education.
- An equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered
- Verification of Academic credentials may be required

**Required Experience**:

- Work experience in a technology transfer office/organization and in-depth understanding of intellectual property and commercialization process.
- Advanced knowledge of IP protection strategies, licensing and commercialization practices, along with start-up companies and entrepreneurship.
- Experienced and proven negotiator with an advanced understanding of legal agreements including but not limited to NDAs, contracts, licenses, and MTAs.
- In-depth knowledge of business practices, corporate organization, finance and marketing.
- Knowledge of University policy and procedures related to research, intellectual property, and the execution of contractual agreements.
