Purpose
The Research Assistant will join the Brain-Heart Interconnectome Research Program team, a $109 million initiative funded by the CFREF (Canada First Research Excellence Fund). This innovative program will transform the prevention and treatment of brain-heart interconnected conditions, improving the health and quality of life of Canadians and people worldwide.
In this role, the Research Assistant will play a crucial role by acting as the cross-cutting liaison for various user groups who will utilize the Brain-Heart Collaborative Data Portal. The portal is a consortium effort led by a range of partner organizations, designed to provide a user-friendly data platform with centralized access to curated brain-heart data, data resources, analytic tools and open science archiving capabilities. The portal will provide end users with cutting-edge data curation (e.g., access to multiple data sources, linkage capabilities, and analytic tools), a data repository, and data management and governance resources. The role would be ideal for someone with knowledge of the Canadian academic research and data landscape.
Reporting to the Chairs of the Brain-Heart Collaborative Portal and collaborating closely with the BHI Data Portal Steering Committee and the technical team at McGill University, the Research Assistant will engage with various user groups to gather data and understand the needs of cross-cutting areas. They will integrate these requirements into the portal’s infrastructure and provide training to educate users on its features and benefits. The Research Assistant will work with cross-cutting leads to develop innovative solutions and ensure alignment of initiatives with long-term objectives, contributing to the strategic direction of the Brain-Heart Collaborative Portal. The Research Assistant will also facilitate collaboration between diverse organizations, data sources, and stakeholder groups by acting as a cross-cutting liaison.
**Responsibilities**:
- Identify and analyze the needs and priorities of strategic areas to ensure they are effectively addressed.
- Establish and engage with user groups to better understand their needs and incorporate their feedback.
- Develop and implement clear guidelines for handling user data, including maintaining appropriate consent records for data sharing.
- Create and maintain standardized protocols for data handling, including anonymization and encryption, across various data sources.
- Design and implement dashboards to improve transparency and accessibility of research data.
- Facilitate secure and anonymized access to data, ensuring compliance with data-sharing requirements and stakeholder needs.
- Conduct training sessions tailored to the needs of different user groups, focusing on both technical aspects of the BHCDP infrastructure and the principles of openness, transparency, and community resource sharing.
Mandatory qualifications
- Master’s degree (e.g., Biotechnology, MHA, or degree in a related field)
- Requires 3 years of relevant experience as a Research Assistant
- Experience with data governance, stakeholder engagement, and/or data science
Desirable qualifications
- Knowledge of the academic research ecosystem in Canada
- Experience implementing data governance systems or tools
- Fluency in French is an asset but not mandatory

- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently. Self-motivated and proactive in solving technical problems.
- Excellent interpersonal relations and communications skills, sound judgment, and ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
