The Prince Edward Island Nurses Union (PEINU) proudly serves approximately 1500 members, including Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners employed by Health PEI, on Prince Edward Island.

PEINU is hiring a permanent full-time Communications Officer. This is an onsite position with occasional travel to various Health PEI worksites or events.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications Officer is responsible for overseeing PEINU’s social media accounts, media relations, and communications with government and other organizations. This role ensures that the union’s messaging aligns with its mission, strengthens relationships with key stakeholders, and enhances the visibility and influence of the union within the healthcare and labour sectors.

**Key Responsibilities**:

- Develop and implement internal and external communication strategies that educate nurses and enhance the public image and advocacy efforts of the union.
- Create, manage and post content for the union’s website, social media channels, newsletters and annual magazine (Conerns).
- Serve as the primary media contact, handling press releases, media inquiries, and public statements.
- Organize advocacy campaigns, education events, Annual General Meeting and member engagement activities; including event logistics, presentation materials and prizes
- Implement brand strategy and maintain inventory of branded products
- Provide strategic guidance to the Executive Director and President on communication and advocacy initiatives.
- Analyze government budgets and documents to proactively position the union’s advocacy initiatives.
- Monitor legislative developments and policies affecting healthcare and labour unions.
- Monitor Nurses Union activities across Canada to share information and inform PEINU direction.
- Provide research, strategic direction and administrative support to the Executive Director and Negotiating team during Collective Bargaining.

**Qualifications & Requirements**
- 2-5 years experience in public relations, media relations, government affairs, or advocacy.
- Strong understanding of political processes, labour policies, and public affairs.
- Excellent writing, public speaking, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with internal leadership and external partners.
- Experience in campaign management, strategic communications, and crisis management.
- Experience with social media, website, database and voting software; such as Teams, Canva, Survey Monkey, Hootsuite.

**Education & Experience**
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, political science, public relations, or a related field required.
- 2-5 years of experience in public relations, advocacy, government relations, or union leadership.

**Work Environment & Expectations**
- Onsite, full-time position requiring occasional evening and weekend work.
- Occasional travel may us required, requiring access to a vehicle when needed.
