**Job description**

The Race Sailing Coach will share responsibility for the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club ILCA Sailing Team. The incumbent will be responsible for planning and operating training for athletes four days per week during the summer, spring, and fall, and on weekends during daylight saving time. You will also be required to attend and coach at local, provincial, national, and international regattas. You possess strong organizational, communication, and logístical skills. The incumbent will have regular contact with parents, other teams, provincial and national sailing associations, regatta coordinators, contractors, and suppliers; and therefore, must be friendly, courteous, and knowledgeable of the rules and regulations.

Among the most important qualities we look for in our instructors and coaches is the ability to instill a love and joy for sailing in those you are teaching and coaching with a positive and encouraging demeanour and introduce sailing as a lifelong sport.

**Duties & Responsibilities**:

- The sailing coach must be able to teach safety, boat handling and sailing theory to students in ILCA dinghies who are intermediate or advanced racing sailors.
- Develop their team to compete and achieve at the highest level, with the penultimate goal of developing suitable athletes to represent Canada in the Olympic Games.
- Develop and follow lesson plans that include dry land and on-the-water drills and inclement weather activities.
- Assist in the revision and implementation of the performance racing curriculums and program material.
- Together with the Head ILCA coach, maintain and implement a strategy of athletes graduating to the National team through planned improvement programs
- Maintain a professional development plan, participating in courses and seminars offered by the coaching association of Canada, ViaSport, BC Sailing and Sail Canada and other relevant associations.
- Communicate effectively with a wide range of people associated with the programs, including but not limited to participants, parents, volunteers, other staff, and across RVYC internal departments
- Organize training Camps in conjunction with other Clubs, and the provincial and national sailing associations
- Manage social media platforms and update them regularly with engaging content such as team achievements, updates, and photo and video content. Write quarterly reports for inclusion within a member publication, and occasional updated for the weekly membership e-zine.
- Perform daily opening and closing duties, maintenance and cleanliness of sailboat fleet, coach boat fleet, coaching equipment, and indoor and outdoor instructional spaces
- Timely expense reporting, team billing, and budget management
- Maintain an enthusiastic attitude and a desire to help shape a friendly, fun-filled and competitive sailing team
- Assist the Sailing Director and Head ILCA coach in regatta registration, planning and delivery
- Assist parents with planning processes, reminders, directions, details of regattas, training, etc.
- Undertake regular travel to out-of-town regattas within BC, Eastern Canada and Southern and Northern USA, with a busy summer travel season.
- Collaborate with the Sailing Director and designated fleet representatives to transition and retain graduating athletes to adult fleets and other intermediate programs
- Other ad-hoc duties requested by the Head Coach, Sailing Director and General Manager
- Champion a diverse and inclusive environment for all athletes

**Requirements & Qualifications**
- Experience working with youth, and leading with positive reinforcement as a role model
- Minimum 3 years ILCA Racing Experience, with demonstrated achievements and performance at national and international level
- CanSail 5-6 Instructor certification or international equivalent, and /or demonstratable High Performance coaching experience
- Current Emergency First Aid and CPR
- Marine Radio Operators Certificate
- Police Check and Vulnerable Sector
