Job description

**RESPONSIBILITIES - SAFETY**
- Communicate and coordinate H&S procedures, policies and systems on daily basis in the field.
- Deliver H&S awareness or site specific orientations for critical tasks.
- Cooperate in auditing our Safety Management System in the field as part of maintaining our COR certification.
- Conduct Safety inspections and track data to establish trends of compliance.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of BC legislation and codes of practice.
- Encourage and educate employees to take precautions and adhere to safety rules to protect themselves and the equipment they use from damage.
- Identify and review various health and safety concerns specific to the work site.
- Ensure engineering controls, site protection and signage is in place on multi-employer jobsites to protect other workers in adjacent areas from unauthorized access during demolition activities of hazardous building materials.
- When the Field Safety Coordinator becomes aware of unsafe acts or conditions, they must first approach those involved and provide education or instruction of the nature of the unsafe act. If there is an unsatisfactory outcome the Field Safety Coordinator will notify the Foreman.
- Document safety infractions, record keeping and act as a resource to the management team on targeted training & development of workers.
- Monitor WCB claims and manage accordingly.
- Perform Certificate of Recognition internal audits.

**RESPONSIBILITIES - CLAIMS MANAGEMENT**
- Assist the Safety Manager, or delegate, and participate in investigations of injuries, accidents and near misses. Identify the causes and discuss with the JOSH Committee on improvements to our safety management system. Approval is required from the Safety Manager, or delegate, prior to implementation.
- Conduct worker interviews, document on investigation reports and submit to Safety Manager, or delegate, for review.
- Coordinate and assist workers on a ‘recovery at work’ program, documentation and RTW reporting requirements to WCB.

**RESPONSIBILITIES - TRAINING**
- Implement H&S programs: provide internal training on safety topics.
- Conduct tailgate/toolbox meetings as required to promote awareness of safety statistics, changes in policies/procedures and provide an open forum for workers concerns.
- Conduct emergency preparedness drills on-site for scenarios such as power interruption, fire, earthquake, medical distress in containment and flood. On completion, discuss the outcome and take an opportunity to train workers on protocols & procedures.

**PROGRAM COORDINATION**

As part of the Occupational Health and Safety Program you will be responsible to participate or administer as directed by the Safety Manager, or delegate, in the programs listed below:

- COR Program
- Return to Work Program
- Emergency Preparedness
- Respirator Program
- TDG - Spill Procedures
- Hearing Program
- Field Safety Training
- Statistics Program

**REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE**

**Hazmat Abatement Industry Experience a definite asset**
- Clean Shaven.
- Physically fit to do the job (lifting, climbing etc.).
- Valid driver’s license with a clean abstract.
- Availability to work outside of regular business hours, weekends and short term out of town work, as required.
- Be able to wear respiratory protection and experienced in worker decontamination on High Risk Abatement sites.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in occupational health and safety.
- Experienced in building construction, demolition techniques and restoration work.
- Working knowledge in the Canada Labour Code, Workers’ Compensation Act, Worksafe BC Occupational Health & Safety regulations, policies, guidelines and standards.
- Strong computer skills and proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Good oral and written communication skills. Courses in conflict resolution and mediation is preferred.
- High attention to detail, able to keep organized and accurate records and documentation
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Adaptable, self-directed, mature and able to use good judgement.
- Working knowledge of asbestos abatement and construction terms and processes.
- WCB Claims management experiences are an asset.

**REQUIRED EDUCATION & CERTIFICATIONS**
- Grade 12 education plus post-secondary certificate in Occupational Health & Safety or equivalent.
- Certified Construction Safety Officer (CSO).
- Certificate of Recognition (COR) certified.
- Occupational First Aid Level II (OFA 2).
- Supervising for Safety, Worksafe BC is an asset.
- Principles of Health & Safety Management, BC Construction Safety Association (BCCSA), is an asset.
- Hold or working towards an NHSA or NCSO designation through BCCSA is an asset.
