Assists the Medical Officer of Health in providing health promotion, disease prevention, and health protection programs to Regional residents. Directs management of assigned divisions in the Department.

**Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required**:

- Must have a degree in Medicine with current licence to practise medicine in Ontario from the College of Physicians and Surgeons. Must have a Fellowship (FRCPC) in Community Medicine or Public Health and Preventive Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
- Knowledge of epidemiology and biostatistics, health promotion theory and practice, program planning and evaluation, public health research (quantitative and qualitative), communicable disease control and prevention, environmental and occupational health, health policy analysis, public health management and administration, strategic planning and priority-setting, media and public relations.
- Knowledge of relevant standards, protocols and legislation. Knowledge of data collection, analysis, and research/evaluation design.
- Leadership and human relations skills to direct, develop, motivate, and support staff; conduct presentations on public health issues to universities, speciality conferences, community groups; defend priorities and balance objectives in a political environment; present issues and reports to Committee and Council; represent the Department on committees; serve as media spokesperson; and participate as an effective team member.
- Analytical and continuous improvement skills to adapt to changing requirements within the provincial and municipal health care system.
- Ability to prepare, review, and edit reports to Committee and Council. Ability to write correspondence, memos, reports, research papers, and other documents.
- Computer skills with ability to use software such as Microsoft Office, and understand statistical analysis and interactive data dashboard software (e.g., Intra-health, Hedgehog) sufficient to provide direction regarding the appropriate purchase, maintenance, and use of such systems. Understanding of electronic health database systems, including oversight of policies, procedures, threat risk assessments, and governance procedures to ensure data quality and compliance with privacy legislation and ensure protection from electronic threats.
- Ability to participate on evening/weekend emergency public health coverage rotation with the MOH.
- Ability to travel within and outside Waterloo Region.
