Under direction of the Supervisor, Grounds and Gardens, the incumbent schedules and coordinates the day-to-day activities of the gardeners and grounds workers. The incumbent is a working senior gardener, undertaking Gardener duties and responsibilities in any or all areas of the grounds and gardens operations, in addition to the lead hand responsibilities outlined below.

The Charge Hand liaises with the Supervisor with respect to managing and completing projects, records attendance and equipment maintenance, purchase of supplies, and assists in the development of all aspects of the gardens and grounds. Safe site operation for staff and visitors and protection and enhancement of the National Historic Site are the primary responsibilities of the position.

The incumbent must be capable of periods of high intensity physical work and have an ability to work flexible hours as needed to meet the needs of the clients. The incumbent is required to lift, carry and place heavy loads as a routine requirement of the position. Operation of and minor repairs to a wide variety of motorized and task-specific machinery, both on and off site, is required to perform the duties outlined below and requires extreme diligence when operating on public highways. At times, may be required to meet the operational needs of the university team including working in extreme weather conditions or assisting with other teams.

**Required**:

- Grade 12 graduation from a secondary school or equivalent
- Possession of a valid B.C. Pesticide Applicator License
- Possession of a valid Class 5 driver’s license in the Province of B.C.
- Trade Qualification in Horticulture preferred, supplemented by three (3) years of experience in horticulture, of which two (2) years’ experience must be in a supervisory capacity in horticulture and
- Red Seal certification in horticulture or a certificate in Horticulture with five (5) years’ experience of which a minimum of two (2) years should be in supervisory role
- Experience in a supervisory capacity in a similar facility or training
- Knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (WHMIS) and the use of Safety Data sheets (SDS)

**Skills and Abilities**:
To be successful in this position, the incumbent must demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Knowledge of heritage landscaping
- Ability to provide effective leadership, plan and prioritize work schedules and assignments

**Preferred**:

- Heritage landscape or botanical garden experience ability to provide interpretive services and continuing education
- Leadership/management skills and experience including project planning, communication, conflict resolution and financial management
- Ability to work in all types of weather conditions
- Ability to operate equipment related to the duties
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Knowledge of WorkSafeBC (WSBC) requirements and associated provincial regulations
- Extensive knowledge of procedures involved in the work performed
