**Basic Function**:The Materials Collection Grade 1 is responsible for removing litter and waste material from the Zoo site. Processes waste, recycles, organizes materials including maintaining and operating the compost area, removal and transportation of animal waste and removal of ice and snow. This position will assist and provide support in implementing the Strategic Plan.
**Responsibilities**:
- Picks up loose litter on Zoo property and ensures Zoo site is kept clean and tidy.
- Collects recyclable from staff and public collection bins.
- Empties garbage containers located on Zoo site.
- Collects waste from animal areas and food service outlets.
- Maintains and operates the compost area of the Zoo.
- Ensures Zoo site is clean and that the garbage and recycling containers are tidy and reports if in need of repair.
- Answer general inquiries from the public.
- May be required to make brief public presentations and assist with behind-the-scenes tours.
- May be required to perform lead hand duties in the absence of Materials Collection Grade 2.
- May be required to carry and use a radio.
- Operates a variety of equipment used in the collection, transport and processing of waste, recyclable and organic materials.
- Ensures that central storage areas for recyclable materials are free of contaminants and reports contamination problems in collection areas to Supervisor.
- Assists in exhibit design and renovation.
- Gives guidance and direction to non-permanent staff assigned to the Unit.
- Assists in the removal of snow and ice from Zoo Site.
- Follow all policies and branch instructions.
- Attends appropriate training as required.
**Qualifications**:
- Must have completed high school, OSSD, or equivalent. Post-secondary education an asset.
- Previous experience in the collection of recyclable materials or compost management.
- Demonstrated interest in waste reduction and management issues.
- Must possess a class D driver’s license valid in the Province of Ontario with a Z endorsement for air brakes, along with a good driving record. 1 to 2 years of driving experience is an asset.
- Previous experience in the operation of heavy equipment used in horticultural or material collection operations an asset.
- Capable of working with minimum supervision.
- Must ensure all applicable licenses and certificates remain valid and in good standing. Copies of licenses and certificates to be provided at time of hire and upon renewal.
- Well-developed interpersonal skills, along with strong communications skills.
- Working knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS legislation.
- Must be knowledgeable in the use of computerized programs and systems.
- Must be able to work weekends, shifts and holidays as scheduled.
- Must be able to deal with staff and public in a courteous and efficient manner.
- Capable of meeting the physical requirements of the position.
