**Function**:
The University of Ottawa Heart Institute and the Ottawa Heart Institute Research Corporation (collectively, the “Institute”) fosters a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship and champions the commercialization of the Institute’s research discoveries and wellness innovations.

The Institute is seeking a dynamic, creative business development professional with skills in moving innovations and research discoveries through the stages of commercialization.

**Responsibilities**:

- Establish strong relationships with scientific and clinical researchers to learn about their work and identify new technologies.
- Evaluate the suitability for patentability protection and the commercialization potential (marketability and technology readiness) of new technologies.
- Work with researchers to advance promising technologies, develop commercialization strategies and seek out potential industry partners to commercialize the technologies.
- Develop and maintain relationships with industry partners.
- Proactively pursue opportunities for industry partnerships, licensing, and potential spin-offs.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders and senior executives, as well as business development professionals at the University of Ottawa’s Innovation Support Services and local health research institutes to contribute to the innovation eco-system and offer effective and efficient technology transfer activities.
- Evaluate the commercialization potential of patented technologies to maximize potential commercialization revenues while effectively managing intellectual property costs.
- Evaluate the commercialization potential (marketability and feasibility) of cardiovascular wellness products and services to identify those with differentiating value and greatest potential to scale and generate revenue.
- Promote cardiovascular wellness products and services through marketing activities (preparing business plans, funding proposals and pitches) to potential industry partners, sponsors, licensees, and/or investors.
- Drive the negotiation and drafting (in conjunction with Legal Affairs) of intellectual property related agreements.
- Provide intellectual property rights advice and support to other Research Administration offices as needed.
- Participate in initiatives as requested by the General Counsel.

**Qualifications**:

- Advanced university degree in life sciences (MSc, PhD, MD or similar).
- MBA preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant industry experience or technology transfer experience, preferably in the cardiovascular field.
- Knowledge of and passion for commercializing early-stage technologies.
- Experience in patent protection and administration, and business acumen to understand and communicate new technology opportunities to potential industry partners.
- Experience in commercializing technologies.
- Knowledge of and existing relationships with companies in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and cardiovascular wellness markets.
- Experience conducting market research, preparing business cases, and launching new services/service businesses preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including ability to match the research mindset of UOHI researchers with bottom-line business goals of industry partners and venture capitalists.
- Positive outlook and ability to multi-task and prioritize while working under pressure, both independently and a team player.
- Self-starter with demonstrated history of taking initiative.
- Experience negotiating commercialization research partnerships and licensing deals preferred.
- Experience launching start-up companies, including sourcing seed and venture capital funding, preferred.
