Part Time Rail Loader

Position Title: Part Time Rail Loader - Location: 1150 Stevenson Rd. S., Oshawa, ON Status: Part Time **Purpose** The Rail Loader is responsible for preparing the rail cars for loading, driving the customer's finished product onto the rail cars, secure the vehicles down and preparing the rail cars for transportation this position will be part time with majority weekend work and holidays with the ability to pick up shifts when available. **Essential Duties** - Prepare the rail car for loading - Enter the new vehicle designated for the rail car - Drive the new vehicle from the staging area onto the rail car and park it - Exit the vehicle - Place the chock blocks in their proper position on both sides of the tire - Place the strap into position around the tire - Pull the strap tight through the seatbelt clip on the bracket - Position the ratchet onto the nut of each chock block - Tighten the nut until the ratchet clicks twice at the preset foot-pounds of pressure - Exit the train by climbing down the ladder railings on the outside of the rail car - Lift and lower the Deck Lids on the ends of the rail cars after all the vehicles have been loaded or off-loaded - Check vehicles for any damage and report to Supervisor or Manager **Loader Tasks** - Ensure the loading equipment has been properly inspected - Make sure derailer and safety procedures are up (blue flag protection) - Mount the loader - Power up the equipment - Maneuver equipment into place at appropriate deck level of rail car - Make sure equipment is secured in place using all safe measures - To remove from rail car, reverse the above procedure **Other Duties / Requirements** - Exhibit a behaviour and conduct that maintains a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner so that the incumbent gets along with customers, vendors, co-workers, and management - Maintain good and regular attendance - Demonstrate the ability to work in a variety of work situations - Present a positive demeanour - Be able to react to change productively and handle other essential tasks as assigned **Relevant Physical Activity Demands** **Loading** **_ Sitting: _**The worker sits while driving a vehicle **_ Standing/Walking: _**Waking from the bus to the vehicle, Walking off the train, Walking from the train back to the bus **_ Climbing: _**Climb up or down a ladder on the side of the rail car to enter or exit the train **_ Lifting/Carrying: _**Chock blocks weigh 3.5 - 4 kg (8-9 lbs), Bridge plates weigh 18 kg (40 lbs) **_ Pushing/Pulling: _**The pins on the Deck Lids are pulled out with 9 kg (20 lbs) of force, Car chock blocks are secured by pushing on a pin with the thumb or finger with 9 kg (20 lbs) of force **_ Gripping/Handling: _**Holding the steering wheel while driving, gripping rungs of the ladder while climbing and using three-point contact. Grip force while climbing onto the train must be at least ½ of the body weight especially on first rung where legs are used only mínimally. Grip forces must match or exceed the forces described for lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling above, where the hands are used **_ Bending: _**The worker must work with blocks on the floor of the rail car, which requires forward bending of the neck and some forward bending of the torso as well. Any worker taller than 160 cm (5 feet, 3 inches) must bend the neck and or the body to walk on the tri-level rail cars. **_ Kneeling: _**Most workers kneel while working with the chock blocks **_ Reaching: _**Bridge plates are passed from below to overhead when placing them on the highest level of the rail cars **Ratcheting** **_ Standing/Walking:_** Walking between vehicles, along entire length of train **_ Climbing:_** Must climb on and off trains, up/down as many as 12 ladder rungs on the side of the rail car using three-point contact on the ladder **_ Kneeling/Squatting_**: While tightening chock blocks on the rail car floor. Most Ratcheters wear knee pads **_ Lifting/Carrying:_** Regular size ratchet weighs 1 kg (2 lbs) **_ Pushing/Pulling: _**Tension in the handle at the highest point of tension on the chock block was measured to be 12 kg (27 lbs) **_ Gripping/Handling: _**Must be able to hold the ratchet handle with the hands while tightening, which would require a grip force of at least 12 kg (27 lbs) **_ Bending:_** Any worker taller than 160 cm (5 feet, 3 inches) would have to bend the neck and or the back to walk on the trains **_ Repetition: _**Calculations for Pushing/Pulling and Gripping, The chock block must be tightened to a point where the ratchet "clicks" twice **Working Conditions**: - Work is performed out doors in all weather conditions - Work with a team of other Rail associates - Work in tight spaces when vehicles are loaded onto the rail cars **Minimum Requirements** - Secondary school diploma - Minimum one year heavy labour experience - Valid driver's license; good driving record - Basic computer skills - beginner level skills w
