**Job purpose/mandate**
The Director of Credit and Risk is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of credit assessment, risk analysis, and credit management processes within the organization. This role involves developing and implementing credit policies and procedures, evaluating creditworthiness of clients, monitoring credit exposure, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. The Director of Credit and Risk plays a crucial role in safeguarding the financial health of the company by effectively managing credit and mitigating risks associated with lending and financial transactions.
**Duties and Responsibilities**:
- Develop and maintain comprehensive credit policies and procedures to guide credit decision-making processes and ensure consistency and compliance with regulatory standards.
- Assess the creditworthiness of prospective clients by analyzing financial statements, credit reports, and other relevant information to determine risk levels and make informed lending decisions.
- Conduct thorough risk analysis to identify, evaluate, and mitigate potential credit risks associated with lending activities, including industry trends, market conditions, and economic factors.
- Implement strategies for managing credit exposure and minimizing bad debt losses, including establishing credit limits, monitoring credit utilization, and initiating collection efforts when necessary.
- Monitor the performance of the credit portfolio, track key metrics, and identify emerging risks or opportunities for improvement. Implement strategies to optimize portfolio performance and maintain a healthy credit quality.
- Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards governing credit and risk management practices, including anti-money laundering (AML) and know your customer (KYC) requirements.
- Provide leadership and guidance to the credit and risk management teams, including training, mentoring, and performance management to ensure high-quality work and professional development.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including senior management, finance, sales, and legal departments, to communicate credit and risk-related issues, provide insights, and support strategic decision-making.
- Continuously assess and improve credit and risk management processes, systems, and tools to enhance efficiency, effectiveness, and accuracy in decision-making and risk mitigation.
**Qualifications**:
- Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics, or a related field.
- Proven experience 10+ years in credit risk management, preferably in a financial services or banking environment, with a track record of success in developing and implementing credit policies and managing credit portfolios.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial data, perform risk assessments, and make sound credit decisions.
- Thorough understanding of regulatory requirements and industry best practices related to credit risk management, compliance, and lending operations.
- Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate complex concepts and build collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a team, drive results, and foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.
- Proficiency in financial analysis tools, risk management software, and Microsoft Office suite.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to multitask and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment
