Manager, English for Academic Purposes

**Purpose**:
The School of Continuing Studies (SCS) is a large and complex revenue-generating education enterprise designed to provide English language instruction and continuing professional education programs to students in the GTA, nationally and internationally. SCS serves the diverse needs of international students seeking to obtain language and postsecondary education to excel in Canada, and domestic students seeking to upgrade their professional education, change careers or obtain Canadian education/ credential. SCS generates revenue for York University and a funnel of undergraduate and graduate students for York University to assist with meeting the University's enrolment targets. SCS is comprised of two main divisions: (a) the English Language Institute (ELI), and (b) Continuing Professional Education (CPE) programs. The ELI offers a range of specialized non-degree courses designed to meet the needs of specific groups of students, primarily international students, with the teaching of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) as a primary focus. Reporting to the Associate Director, English Language Institute, the Manager, English for Academic Purposes is responsible for managing and overseeing a portfolio of English Language Institute programs. The role contributes effectively as a member of the management by contributing to the strategic plan to deliver EAP programs and provide key program-related input and supports revenue and growth targets. The role is responsible for the program's overall success including academic outcomes and management of margins and profitability through cost control and alignment to defined objectives. The role is accountable for talent management of program instructors, including staffing teaching assignments, admission evaluation, student placement, class schedules, class changes, student and instructor concerns/grievances, program utilization of resources and technology, program design and development, student/instructor evaluation and assessment, and the coordination/supervision of program instructors. The EAP Manager demonstrates a commitment to service excellence, as well as decolonization, equity, diversity, and inclusion (DEDI) while upholding the university's vision, mission and values.
**Education**:
Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline.
Graduate degree in a relevant discipline such as TESL/Applied Linguistics or similar field.
**Experience**:
5 years of related experience.
Relevant experience includes needs assessment, curriculum development, instructional design, training delivery, as well as project management.
Experience with student advising and support.
Experience teaching / administrative career outside of Canada.
Experience in drafting and implementing international programs.
3 years of management experience.
**Skills**:

Knowledge and in-depth understanding of the literature and pedagogy in the EAP fields.
Knowledge in the design, delivery, and management of ESL/EAP/ESP programs, such as Adult Learning Principles, needs assessment, and training effectiveness.
Understanding of the international student market and expectations.
Business acumen and entrepreneurial approach to new business and program opportunities.
Knowledge of supervisory and people management skills, effective communication, and planning and time management skills.
Knowledge of unionized workplace and administration of the collective agreement (grievances).
Knowledge of HR Policies and Procedures as well as recruitment & selection processes.
Familiarity with the university environment and administration of academic programs.

Normal office work environment.
May travel occasionally to conferences and professional meetings within Canada, the USA and outside of North America.
- **Compensation**:
York's CPM Compensation Framework has a salary grid consisting of 6 or 8 steps (depending on job grade) which is reviewed annually with possible adjustments, and a lump sum Performance Based Recognition Award.
