JOB SUMMARY
The Research Associate will work with Wellstream
), a recently established interdisciplinary research centre focused on generating innovative solutions to strengthening mental health and reducing substance use harms for children, youth, and their communities. Wellstream is housed in the School of Nursing at the University of British Columbia, one of the world’s top research institutions
). The School of Nursing is an outstanding academic unit, has an international reputation for research and scholarship, and has a vision characterized by social relevance and excellence. The School offers a full range of innovative programs, including an intensive upper-division BSN, MN-NP, MSN and PhD program.
Working directly with Dr. Emily Jenkins, the Scientific Director of Wellstream, and the Centre’s Director of Research Operations, the Research Associate will oversee the planning and development of Wellstream’s research program, and support project management and programming implementation. They will also work strategically to build and expand relationships with community and academic partners, lead the planning and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data, develop and implement knowledge mobilization strategies and products, and mentor other research staff and trainees.
WORK PERFORMED
Data Collection, Data Analysis, and Supervision of Research Trainees: The Research Associate will provide their expertise to oversee data collection plans and lead complex analyses and interpretations of qualitative and quantitative datasets. They will bring familiarity with a variety of theoretical frameworks used in health and social science research related to child, youth and community mental health and substance use.
Knowledge Production and Mobilization: The Research Associate will have strong academic writing skills and will lead the production of community and academic reports, policy briefs, manuscripts and conference presentations. They will represent Wellstream and its research at public events and in consultation with community and government agencies.
The Research Associate will work out of Wellstream’s offices, located at the UBC School of Nursing (Vancouver).
QUALIFICATIONS- PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., nursing, public health, education, sociology, psychology, sociology) from a recognized academic institution.- Demonstrated research interests in child, youth and community mental health and substance use, population health, and social determinants of health.- Expertise working in a research environment using both qualitative and quantitative research methods.- Experience with research design and analysis involving survey research, population-based datasets, multi-site qualitative datasets, and intervention research.- Experience working and conducting research with people of diverse genders, sexual orientations, and socio-cultural backgrounds.- Demonstrated project management expertise and experience with multi-year, multi-site research studies.- Excellent writing skills and demonstrated ability to publish.- Effective leadership, mentoring and teamwork skills.- Strong foundation in research design and measurement.- Enthusiasm for intellectual rigor and community engagement.- Ability to be thorough, accurate and bring a high level of attention to detail.- Willingness to work productively in a self-directed manner according to deadlines.- Excellent interpersonal skills.
