Treasury Board and Finance - Tax and Revenue Administration (TRA) is responsible for the collection of revenue and the administration of Alberta’s tax, revenue and related benefit programs. The focus of our organization is to ensure a fair, efficient and effective provincial tax and revenue system. Business Solutions within TRA provides a diverse scope of services to the Branch and to Alberta Government Ministries, in the support of Collections and Recoveries activities. The Paralegal Services teams within Business Solutions perform activities such as management of highly sensitive portfolios and paralegal services involving collection, legal and enforcement actions.

**Role Responsibilities**:
- Reporting to the Team Lead - Paralegal Services, the Paralegal Officer provides a variety of collection and legal enforcement services.
Key responsibilities for the Paralegal Officer role are:
- Investigating facts surrounding accounts and advise parties of available resolutions including repayment arrangements and schedules;
- Communicating account information to collection agencies and work with agencies on resolutions.
- Performing research in various databases and utilize legal remedies to maximize account recovery such as Garnishee Summons and Writs of Enforcement.
- Representing the Crown’s position at mediation hearings, pre-trial conferences and Provincial Court trials.

**Qualifications**:
- A University degree in a related field (e.g. Paralegal Studies, Business Administration) supplemented by a minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in a civil litigation/civil enforcement environment or Legal Assistant/Paralegal Studies Diploma plus 4 years’ experience in a civil litigation environment.
Required experience includes:
- Knowledge of the Alberta Rules of Court
- Experience with legal terminology and practices, court processes and relevant legislation and regulations
- Experience in a collections environment and excellent understanding of government structure
Assets for this role include:
- Commissioner of Oaths designation
- Paralegal level membership with the Alberta Association of Alberta Paralegals (AAPP)
- Previous experience working in complex program administration
Equivalency:
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education
