We are looking for a Construction Safety Officer for a residential highrise project at King's Wharf in Dartmouth. Reporting to the Superintendent, the Safety Officer is primarily responsible for overseeing and assisting with the development, implementation and maintenance of the Safety and Loss Prevention Program including Safe Work Practices/Safe Job Procedures and the Site Emergency Response Plan.

Duties include:

- Monitor the safety performance of all on-site workers
- Encourage and educate employees to take precautions and adhere to safety rules to protect themselves and the equipment they use from damage
- Identify and review various health and safety concerns specific to the work site and ensure construction site activities do not put non-construction site people outside of the site at risk
- Investigate all injuries, accidents and near misses including identifying the causes and advise on any improvement in safety standards that need to be made
- Review accident summary reports and take appropriate action when accident trends are unfavorable
- Ensure safety reports and data are collected and submitted to the Superintendent and/or Project Manager as required including, but not limited to:

- Man-hours worked and safety logistics
- Copies of accident reports and WCB forms
- Description of any unsafe conditions discovered and steps taken to correct those conditions
- Copy of inspection reports on equipment
- Copy of safety inspection checklists or visit summary reports
- Copy of audit reports and actions taken
- Administer the WHMIS training program
- Ensure MSDS of all controlled products on site are up-to-date and available to the workers at all times
- Act as a liaison with the government (OH&S), WCB, ambulance services and hospitals, management, subcontractors and workers regarding aspects of health and safety on and off the job
- Ensure daily risk assessments are being conducted as per company policy
- Recertify in any courses pertaining to the CSO status that expires every three years, Auditor, Flag Train-the-Trainer, WHMIS Train the Trainer Auditor
- Coordinate and conduct site orientations, weekly toolbox safety meetings, safety inspections, audits, joint work site health and safety meetings
- Update the display safety policies and pertinent information on the company bulletin board
- Advise on appropriate protective equipment and on the cost of implementing changes
- Maintain an inventory list of equipment purchased
- Establish inspection schedules for all tools, major equipment, lifting devices and mobile equipment to ensure safe operating conditions and compliance with current regulations
- Assist injured workers in obtaining modified duties and administer the return to work policy
- Conduct daily site/public hazard assessments and assign corrective actions accordingly
- Conduct daily head counts
- Conduct daily orientations as required
- Collect trade safety paperwork before commencement of work
- Review safe work procedures and practices for all trades on site
- Order PPE
- Track monthly tool inventory
- Keep track of first aid supplies and ordering when needed
- Write and review monthly safety package
- Oversee locking up procedure at end of day
- Assist in organizing of trades including safety/trades manual
- Conduct trade orientations including collection of required certifications and relevant materials

It is also expected that the Safety Officer can perform maintenance items like the maintaining of guardrails, etc.

- 8 hour shift
- Monday to Friday
