Reporting to the Provost and Vice President, Academic, the Associate Dean, Faculty Affairs is responsible for the Medical and Human Sciences Divisions and supervision of direct reports. The Associate Dean oversees administrative matters and leadership related to the Medical and Human Sciences Divisions which are managed by the Division Heads.
The Associate Dean, Faculty Affairs is a participating and reporting member of the NOSM University Senate and is responsible for ensuring timely updates and feedback loops between Senate and the Faculty Affairs portfolio.
The Associate Dean serves as a member of the NOSM University Senior Leadership Group.
**Responsibilities**:
- Participates in the achievement and promotion of the Vision, Mission and strategic plan of NOSM University. Develops a Faculty Affairs five-year strategic plan aligned to the NOSM University strategic plan.
- Provides strategic leadership and advice to the Provost and Vice President Academic on all matters relating to Human Sciences Division and Medical Sciences Division faculty.
- In collaboration with Human and Medical Sciences Division Heads, keeps abreast of important local, provincial and national academic, social and political issues that may directly affect academic activities of faculty members.
- Creates and continually improves strategies to facilitate effective bilateral communication between NOSM University leadership/programs and all Human Sciences Division and Medical Sciences Division faculty members.
- In collaboration with other members of the NOSM University Senior Leadership Group, including the Associate Dean Clinical Partnerships, establishes a process for ongoing review and improvement of the work and learning environment at NOSM University.
- Is responsible for the leadership, supervision, mentorship and evaluation of the Human and Medical Sciences Division Heads and recruitment of such as required.
- Has oversight of appointments, reappointments, assessment of credentials and promotions of all NOSM University faculty within the Medical and Human Sciences Divisions.
- Reviews all complaints and issues related to Human Sciences Division and Medical Sciences Division faculty performance.
- Works closely with Human and Medical Sciences Division Heads to investigate complaints and provide competency coaching to faculty and where necessary, disciplinary measures.
- Maintains financial accountability for the Units operating budget and provides input to the overall University budget as a member of the Budget Committee and the Senior Leadership Group.
- Develops and maintains the annual budgets for the Units, which includes reporting and accountability to monitor and to make decisions regarding allocations in close collaboration with the Medical and Human Sciences Division Heads.
- Provides annual reporting of costs, costs overruns, cost saving opportunities across the various elements of the Medical and Humans Sciences budgets. Coordinates the plans for capital acquisitions.
- Resolves employee complaints, interpersonal conflicts, and incidents including accidents, health and safety concerns, work refusals, and investigations in collaboration with Human Resources.
- Represents the University at provincial, national and international bodies as appropriate.
- Leads administration of Faculty Collective Agreements and Handbook in collaboration with the Director of Human Resources and the President and provides strategic advice in the negotiation process of the Faculty Collective Agreement and amendment discussions with respect to the Handbook.
- Assists and leads in the development of strategic priorities and indicators for NOSM University, as well as implementing them as part of the Senior Leadership Group.
- Participates as a member of the Senate, providing regular reporting on matters related to Faculty Affairs, and ensuring alignment between Senate decisions and Faculty Affairs priorities.
- Implements educational recommendations from the Truth & Reconciliation Commission Report as applicable.
- Recruits and retains high-caliber non-clinical academic faculty with a focus on fulfilling NOSM University’s Social Accountability mandate, Vision, Mission, Values and Academic Principles.
- Maintains standards in academic programs in accordance with accreditation requirements of the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools, or accreditation bodies, as appropriate, in collaboration with the Medical and Human Sciences Division Heads.
- Participates fully in relevant NOSM University accreditation processes, including monitoring compliance, providing required data and reports, and on-site visits.
- Provides ongoing faculty leadership for educational programs at NOSM University.
- Collaborates with curriculum planners of the UME in collaboration with the Medical and Human Sciences Division Heads and other academic programs to ensure faculty input into ongoing refinement of curriculum goals, content, delivery and assessment
