**Halifax Grain Elevator Limited**
**Designed for the Long Game**
Halifax Grain Elevator Limited (HGEL) is a critical industrial operation with deep historical roots and a zero-tolerance approach to chaos. As a key link in global trade, safety here is inseparable from performance, continuity, and trust.
We are seeking a Safety Coordinator to join our leadership team and take ownership of the systems that protect our people, our operations, and our future.
This is not an entry-level role. And it is not a paperwork position.
This role is for someone who understands industrial environments, earns credibility on the floor, and knows how to coordinate safety systems that work under real-world pressure.
**THE ROLE**
The Safety Coordinator is responsible for owning and coordinating the site’s Safety Management System, working in close alignment with:
- Director of Operations
- Director of Maintenance
- Supervisors and front line teams
- Contractors and third-party partners
You will serve as the single point of accountability for safety systems, ensuring compliance, consistency, and continuous improvement—without disrupting the flow of operations that keep goods moving.
You own the system, not every task. Execution is shared. Accountability is clear.
**WHAT YOU’LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR**
- Coordinating and maintaining the site Safety Management System (SMS)
- Leading hazard identification, risk tracking, and system reviews
- Coordinating incident investigations, reporting, and corrective actions
- Managing contractor safety systems and orientations
- Chairing the Workplace Health & Safety Committee
- Preparing agendas, minutes, and follow-up actions
- Coordinating inspections, audits, and compliance activities
- Completing federal and provincial regulatory reporting
- Maintaining training records, competency tracking, and documentation
- Supporting Operations and Maintenance leadership with clear, disciplined safety structure
**WHO YOU ARE**
You are:
- Calm under pressure
- Structured, organized, and disciplined
- Comfortable in industrial or high-risk environments
- Respected by operators and leadership alike
- Confident enforcing standards without ego
- Focused on long-term system strength—not short-term optics
You understand that:
- Safety must support operations, not slow them unnecessarily
- Credibility is earned through presence and consistency
- Strong systems matter more than slogans
**REQUIRED EXPERIENCE**
Required
- Safety experience in an industrial, mechanical, or high-risk environment
- Working knowledge of OH&S legislation and regulatory reporting
- Experience coordinating investigations, training, and compliance systems
**Assets (not mandatory)**
- Mechanical or maintenance exposure
- Experience in ports, grain handling, manufacturing, or heavy industry
- Previous coordinator-level or leadership safety role
**WHAT WE OFFER**
- Employment with a respected, legacy industrial operation
- A leadership team committed to doing things properly—not performatively
- Clear scope, real authority, and long-term relevance
- Structured onboarding and learning of internal systems
- Room for growth as safety systems mature
**Benefits**
- Health & Dental coverage after 3 months
- Pension plan after 3 months
- Three (3) weeks of vacation per year
- Three (3) weeks of paid sick leave per year
This is a role for someone who wants to build something that holds.
**WHY HALIFAX GRAIN ELEVATOR**
Because reliability isn’t a marketing line—it’s a discipline. Because safety here protects lives, equipment, and global trade. Because we build systems meant to last.
This is safety leadership built for the long game.
**HOW TO APPLY**
- A resume outlining relevant experience
- A brief note explaining why this role aligns with your background
Applications will be handled with discretion.
**Job Types**: Full-time, Permanent
Pay: $55,000.00-$65,000.00 per year
