**About the Role**:

The Equity, Diversity and Human Rights Office works collaboratively with campus partners to promote, protect, and uphold fairness and the human rights and responsibilities of all VIU community members.

Reporting to the Director of the Office of Diversity, Equity and Human Rights, the Case Manager and Investigator will support the Director, manage concerns and complaints, and help ensure the University meets its legal obligations under human rights legislation and policy obligations related to harassment, and human rights. This role contributes to VIU's strategic plan by supporting the university's core commitments to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

**Position Expectations**:
Receives concerns and complaints brought to the Office of Diversity, Equity and Human Rights under VIU's Sexual Misconduct, Human Rights, Personal Harassment, and other relevant policies.
Responsible for initial assessment, referral, and triage of cases.
Receives and appropriately refers disclosures and reports of sexual misconduct in a timely and trauma informed manner, pursuant to VIU's Sexual Misconduct Policy and Procedure.
Determines, in consultation with the Director, whether concerns and complaints may best be resolved informally through mediation, negotiation, and other informal means or whether an investigation is appropriate.
Regularly consults with and updates the Director, including identifying opportunities for educating and enhancing VIU's capacity in relation to conflict management, human rights, and equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Works with the Director on strategies to address systemic discrimination related to equity, diversity, inclusion, and human rights issues.
Uses conflict management skills and restorative practices to resolve concerns and complaints when appropriate.
Leads sensitive and complex investigations of formal harassment and human rights complaints by conducting interviews, gathering, and analyzing evidence, reviewing relevant documentation, assessing credibility of parties and witnesses, analyzing facts, making findings, and writing investigative reports.
Maintains detailed confidential records of all concerns, complaints, and investigations. Manages all cases including establishing and maintaining a database so that cases are tracked, prepares regular reports and updates for the Director, prepares semester and annual reports, and identifies trends and systemic issues arising from case file data.
Develops and delivers training on equity, diversity, inclusion, and human rights for the campus community. Participates in the development of targeted training for areas needing training on specific issues following investigations. Conducts follow-up studies of all completed training to evaluate and measure results.

**Required Qualifications**:
A degree in law, human rights or equity-related disciplines, humanities or social sciences, or a related field. Minimum three years' experience. An equivalent combination of educational, professional, and lived experience will be considered.

Must possess comprehensive understanding and experience recognizing and responding to complaints related to discrimination and harassment.
Experience assessing complex human rights issues or complaints based on all B.C Human Rights Code grounds, and strong analytical and problem-solving skills to come up with options and determine appropriate courses of action.
Experience successfully resolving issues and complaints, including through mediation and other forms of informal conflict resolution or restorative practices.
Experience conducting complex and sensitive harassment and human rights investigations, with knowledge of administrative and procedural investigation requirements and best practices.
Demonstrated ability to efficiently manage a high caseload and competing deadlines.
Ability to understand and interpret policies and procedures, familiarity with relevant legislation, and trends and best practices related to equity, diversity, inclusion, and human rights.
Ability to manage highly sensitive issues with sound judgement, discretion, and care, and maintain confidentiality and be trustworthy.
Adept at working effectively and calmly under pressure, meeting deadlines, and managing changing priorities.
Excellent listening, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Superior writing and analytical skills with attention to detail.
Experience working with equity-deserving communities.
Ability to work effectively as a team member with the Director, work collaboratively with other offices and departments and establish and maintain good working relationships with individuals across the organization who are instrumental in ensuring that equity is integrated into all facets of the University.
Adept in Microsoft Office (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
