Camp Director

**Position Summary**
We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Camp Director to manage our remote culturally immersive camp - hi'ma̱nis ḵ̓aḵ̓ut̓ła̱'at̓si (a place of forever learning). This leader will oversee all aspects of camp operations, including safety, direct supervision of camp staff, and facilities maintenance. They will work closely with our language and culture program leaders to ensure our guests and participants have the best experience possible in this very special place. This position requires a strong commitment to the mission of Nawalakw and its core values, as this person will be a role model for positive behaviours for the community, guests, and staff.
**Direct Reports**: Camp Manager, Camp Cooks, Head of Maintenance, caretaker and maintenance staff, kitchen and housekeeping staff and seasonal/work-experience students
**Key Responsibilities**
**Administration**
- Collaborating with intake/rental teams and onsite staff to manage guest care
- Manage the camp budget, spending and contracts in coordination with the finance team
**Team Management**
- Recruit, hire, train, and schedule camp staff, with support from the HR team
- Mentor future camp leads. Creating an atmosphere and plan to train future leadership by sharing responsibility
- Conduct regular staff meetings and training sessions, incorporate staff feedback, provide ongoing support and mentorship, and supervise staff to ensure high operations standards.
**Operations Management**
- Ensure smooth and effective daily camp operations and logistics, including staff scheduling, transportation coordination, cleaning, risk management, and resource/inventory management
- Ensure guests are warmly welcomed, oriented, hosted, and farewelled and facilities are “guest ready” on arrival
- Adhere to a program and enforce safety protocols with the Language Team to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants, Elders, and staff.
**Stewardship of Hada**
- Oversee the stewardship of Hada, including monitoring and reporting on using the a̱wi'nakola (land, waters and wildlife).
- Ensure the responsible and sustainable use of the land in alignment with cultural and environmental values.
**Communication**
- Provide regular operational performance reports to the Executive Director
- Collaborate with the Language Team and participate in planning and management meetings
- Work with the media team to help share our story
**Qualifications**
- Leadership Skills: Proven ability to lead and inspire a diverse team, with strong organizational and management skills.
- Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in remote camp management, education, youth programming, or a related field and Trauma-informed approaches or willingness to obtain before the start of the camp season.
- Cultural Knowledge: Deep understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and values, with the ability to integrate them into camp programming. Preference will be given to those with Kwakwa̱ka̱'wakw traditional ecological knowledge.
- Technical Skills: Basic familiarity with power/water and septic systems and the ability to monitor systems and follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), or the ability to learn
- OFA level 3 (or equivalent) First Aid/CPR Certification: Current certification or willingness to obtain before the start of the camp season.
- Marine/Boat Experience: SVOP/Boat Operations and marine radio certifications. Current certification or willingness to obtain as part of employment.
- Driver’s License: Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
- Physical Ability: Must be able to lift, push, pull, and move product, equipment, and supplies, more than 25 lbs.
- Education: certification in project management or a degree in Education, Social Work, Indigenous Studies, Recreation Management, or a related field is an asset.
**Working Conditions**
- The Camp Director will be expected to live on-site while the camp is operational or make arrangements for other staff or caretaker.
- Must be willing to work irregular hours, including weekends and holidays.
- Food and accommodation are provided free of charge.
**How to Apply**
Pay: $55,000.00-$70,000.00 per year
