**Course title and code**: Waterpower Essentials - APS1410H

**Course description**: This course presents an overview of the waterpower industry, beginning with its ecological and historical contex, how power stations work, and their major components. After a site tour, students will consider the major decision making factors in the design of a waterpower facility: policy and planning considerations, the business case, commercial markets, and risk management. With this, the finer details of power station design are introduced: turbine selection, electrical and control components, as well as how these components work. Further, students are introduced to operations and maintenance considerations, contract models, and dam safety. A course project will mirror these topics, as students evaluate the feasibility of a greenfield waterpower facility. With the support of industry professionals, students will work through the complexity and ambiguity of a development project.

**Estimated Enrolment**: Approximately 30 students

**Class schedule**: One two-hour lecture per week; timetable to be determined.

**Sessional date of appointment**: Fall Session Sept - Dec 2025.

**Salary**:Minimum level of pay is $9,820.7 (Sessional Lecturer I), which includes vacation pay, and may increase depending on applicant’s level of experience and suitability for the position.

**Qualifications**: Advanced degree or certification in Sustainability, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field. Senior-level experience in sustainability education or professional practice with at least 4 years of teaching experience in college/university environment and minimum 10 years working across diverse sectors including electric utilities, education, electrical engineering consulting. Must also have experience organizing/managing guest speakers and experience working with Canadian Construction Documents Committee contracts.

**Brief description of duties**: Duties include: preparation of lectures and course materials for delivery; delivery of lectures; possible supervision of Teaching Assistants; setting and marking of projects, tests and exams; evaluation of final grades; contact with students.
