JOB SUMMARY
The Niagara Region has a 8 month temporary, full-time paid Survey Internship position with the Transportation Division of the Public Works Department. This position assists with a number of projects related to Transportation Operations. This is an excellent opportunity for recent graduates of a Civil Engineering, Geomatics or GIS/Geography program to gain valuable work experience.
Although based out of the Niagara Region Headquarters, located in Thorold (near Brock University), the Surveys Intern will participate in a number of field assignments throughout the Niagara Region.
Position Details:
Hours: 35 hours per week, Monday - Friday 8:30am - 4:30pm.
Location: Based at the Niagara Region’s Headquarters Building (near Brock University), 2201 Sir Isaac Brock Way, Thorold, ON.
The Surveys and Property Information Section is responsible to provide legal, engineering and asset surveys, property information and mapping services to many departments within the Region. This Section works closely with other Transportation Services Sections and divisions within Public Works.
The Surveys Intern will perform field assignments that will consist of surveys and spatial data collection anywhere within the Regional Municipality of Niagara. The student will work as a member of a survey crew performing field related duties, working with the Survey and Mapping Analysts and the Project Surveyor under the management of a licensed Ontario Land Surveyor.
In this position, the student will also receive an introduction to the workings of Regional Government.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Requirements
- Must have successfully completed a Civil Engineering, Geomatics or a related field of study post-secondary degree/diploma program within the last 12 months (or will successfully complete prior to starting this position)
- Must be able to start full-time work no later than May 5, 2025
- Usage of surveying equipment such as total stations and GPS
- Experience with field surveys preferred
- Experience with map production
- Experience with survey data collection methods
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings and other similar technical documents
- Strong communication skills - written and oral
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong computer skills - Microsoft Word, Excel and others
- Excellent analytical skills
- A valid glass G driver’s license
