**Description**
**Your Opportunity**
Stantec has an opportunity for a Junior Environmental Scientist to help support environmental assessments and permitting projects within British Columbia. In this position you will be working under the direction of senior or intermediate assessment and permitting professionals. You will also have the opportunity to work within other technical disciplines including ecology or aquatics. Our projects are in the municipal, ports and marine, transportation, oil and gas, mining, and power sectors.
**Your Key Responsibilities**
- Promote a strong health and safety culture and actively participate in Stantec’s Health, Safety, Security, and Environment Program
- Participate in local and remote-area field work, which may involve:
- Water quality, surface water and groundwater monitoring
- Erosion and sediment control monitoring
- Environmental construction monitoring including fish salvage
- Freshwater fish species identification
- Benthic invertebrate sampling
- Bird species identification (e.g. marine, song, migratory)
- Vegetation and wildlife species identification and data interpretation
- Rare plant identification
- Wetland identification and delineation
- Marine species identification (e.g. intertidal, fish, algae, birds and mammals)
- Provide logístical support for field programs and associated reporting
- Build collaborative relationships with other Stantec staff, including Stantec’s national Assessment and Permitting team
- Support in engagement activities with regulators, Indigenous groups, communities, and stakeholders as part of the project design, environmental assessment and permitting process
- Provide support to proposals (budget development and proposal writing)
**Qualifications**
**Your Capabilities and Credentials**
- Knowledge and experience with federal and/or provincial environmental assessment and/or permitting requirements
- Practical knowledge of environmental mitigation and best management practices (e.g., successful implementation of permit conditions)
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Strong interpersonal and social skills and ability to interact across a broad range of multidisciplinary audiences/ technical backgrounds including internal and external clients and regulatory agencies
- Ability to work in a team setting and meet deadlines
- Follow quality control procedures and strive to provide quality products
- Willingness to travel for project work, as needed
- Indigenous, regulatory, and public engagement experience is an asset
**Education and Experience**
- Bachelor or graduate degree in an environmental, physical science, or engineering related discipline with 1 - 2 years of experience preferred, focusing on environmental assessments or permitting or biology.
- Possession of or eligibility for a professional designation (e.g., R.P.Bio, R.B.Tech, P.Geo., P.Ag., etc.) will also be considered an asset.
- Additional skills such as current British Columbia first aid training, WHMIS, H2S Alive, UTV operator training, CABIN protocol training, electrofishing certification, swiftwater rescue, water and soils sampling, bird and plant identification, mechanical aptitude and experience in the field of environmental science, biology, fisheries, aquatic biology, forestry, terrestrial ecology, or marine biology are assets, but are not required. A driver’s license and access to a vehicle is preferred.
Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.
