UMS provides assistance in instruction, research, and industry through the design and manufacture of specialized components and equipment. Staffed by dedicated trades and technical employees, UMS is equipped with a wide range of conventional machine tools and is capable of producing a wide variety of products and equipment. **Responsibilities**: The Shop Assistants support the operation of the Student Shops and provide advisory and technical support to students for prototyping and implementation of course-based design projects and Clubs/Teams support during evening hours. The Shop Assistants also support the Students Shop Advisor through helping to ensure all tools and facilities are maintained in good working order. The Shop Assistants will be responsible for the cleanliness of the shop and tool maintenance. They will also provide students with assistance/support to students in prototyping their design projects and will be responsible for monitoring those working within the shop, adhering to all safety policies and procedures. **Qualifications**: **Education**: - Secondary School Diploma or equivalent **Experience**: - 1 year of experience supporting research in a related technical field Skills, Abilities & Expertise: - Proficiency with tools, fabrication and machining processes - Familiarity with experimental design and analysis- Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy - Ability to follow processes with high attention to detail - Ability to employ a systematic and efficient approach to work - Computer skills with the ability to learn and use software programs - Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite - Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public - Ability to collect and analyze data in an objective manner - Demonstrated ability to understand and resolve issues - Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals **Why Western?**: Consideration of applicants will include an assessment of previous performance, experience, and qualifications.
