Drug Checking Peer Support Worker

Peer Support Workers provide support and resources to individuals accessing the CTS as members of the CTS team. They will serve clients using harm reduction approaches. Peer Support Workers work with people who use drugs to help individuals improve their own health and well-being, and to help people connect to the services and resources they need. Peer Support Workers are members of the person-centered, inter-professional, team of health providers at Sanguen Health Centre.

The Relief Peer Support Worker position is intended to provide vacation and leave coverage for current staff. Hours may range from zero to a maximum of 20 per week depending on staffing needs.

Note: Abstinence/sobriety is not a requirement for the peer role, but staff are expected to be able to work up to 5 hours without using substances during shifts. All staff are expected to perform their role appropriately during shifts and be accountable to the team and our clients.

**Relief Peer Support Workers will**:

- Provide harm reduction supplies and information, including naloxone training.
- Greet and register clients, reinforce site protocols, monitor areas outside of the site as needed.
- Provide education to clients about safer substance use.
- Assist with responding to overdoses as needed, as part of a team, under the direction of the Registered Nurse(s).
- Monitor clients post-consumption.
- Act as a resource to, and advocate for, individuals accessing the CTS.
- Assist with other team responsibilities as-needed, including reception coverage, bathroom checks, cleaning spaces post-use, preparing recycling/garbage, maintaining adequate stock of supplies in various areas, etc.
- Maintain accurate data and information.
- Participate in evaluation processes related to the CTS and people accessing the services.
- **Personal live(d) experience with substance use - current or somewhat recent (required)**:

- Understanding, and experience, with issues that may impact on people who use drugs (including mental health, lack of housing, poverty, trauma, etc.).
- The ability to be reliable and punctual.
- Good communication skills with coworkers and community.
- Knowledge of some community resources especially those useful to, and accessed by, people who use drugs.
- The ability to work independently and within a multi-disciplinary team.
- The ability to work evenings and/or weekends as required, including on short notice.
- Basic computer skills for data entry and client registration.
