SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Warming Centre is seeking a Peer Worker, someone with lived experience of homelessness and lived experience related to substance use and/or addictions. The heart of this role is connection, shared understanding, and supporting Guests through genuine rapport rather than clinical assessment or authority.

The Warming Centre Peer Worker will provide non-clinical, harm-reduction–informed support to Guests, including navigating services, supporting time-limited goals, offering one-on-one life skills guidance, and assisting with referrals. The Peer Worker will also contribute to the smooth running of the Centre as capacity allows. This role includes representing Guest perspectives within team discussions and advocating for their needs.

HOURS OF WORK

12 hours/week | Four 3-hour shifts | Some weekend availability required

SALARY RANGE: $25 an hour

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Lived experience with homelessness or precarious housing
  • Lived experience related to substance use/addictions
  • Willingness to work in an environment where Guests may be under the influence of various substances
  • Strong interpersonal skills, consistent communication, and comfort maintaining professional boundaries while still engaging authentically and compassionately with Guests
  • Ability to work some overnight and weekend shifts as needed
  • Self-motivation and ability to work within a casual, relationship-focused support model
  • Commitment to non-clinical, harm-reduction–oriented peer support
  • Peer Support Certification is considered an asset
  • First Aid Certification is considered an asset
  • Familiarity with peer support competencies and values
  • Familiarity with culturally safe and trauma-informed practices
  • Experience navigating social, housing, or healthcare systems
