**The opportunity**:
Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director, the Manager of the Plumbing Shop is responsible for the supervision and management of all the functions performed by the Shop. The Plumbing Shop has one Assistant Manager in a direct reporting relationship responsible for Plumbing and Steam Lines (with approx. 5 Plumbers, 7 Steamfitters and 2 Insulators).
The Manager of the Plumbing Shop oversees the management and coordination of all the plumbing/steam work as well as inspection, maintenance and repair work on the infrastructure portfolio managed by Operations and Maintenance. As such, this role carries a high level of accountability.
The plumbing/steam utility distribution grid across campus and within individual buildings is fundamental to the continued operations of the University. The Fort Garry Campus has a single source steam generation system in the CEP from which the entire campus plumbing/steam distribution grid is owned and operated by the UofM. In addition, the natural gas distribution, water supply and waste system as well as storm sewer system are owned and operated by UofM. The Manager of the Plumbing Shop is the owner’s representative for the associated infrastructure, its serviceability and continuity of operations.
Responsibilities include the management of human resources, operations and budget to ensure safe, efficient and effective operations. The incumbent must be familiar with all aspects of the aforementioned trades and has the additional responsibility to coordinate special funded projects that are mechanical in nature. The incumbent must be capable of setting priorities and allocating staff to meet the continuing demand for services within a tight budget.
**The qualifications and experience we’re looking for**:
- A Mechanical Engineering Technology Diploma (CET), or a Journeymen's certificate in the plumbing/steam trade and a plumbing/steam contractor's license, in order of preference listed, is required.
- CIM or PMP designations (or similar) are considered assets.
- Must possess 5 years supervisory experience and have a thorough working knowledge of Plumbing and Steam.
- Must have a sound knowledge of management techniques and disciplines in the administration of people, finances and technical matters including the Coordination of projects.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Must have the ability to read drawings, specifications, manufacturer's literature, etc. and to be able to order materials and instruct staff with sketches and notes.
- Considerable technical knowledge in the construction and engineering fields is required to make decisions of a technical nature.
- Proficient in computer MS Office skills required.
- Strong written and verbal communication required.
- Strong interpersonal and leadership required.
- The ability to work independently and in a team required.
- The ability to be resourceful and exercise diplomacy required
- Must have ability to plan and schedule work; read and interpret plans, specifications and architectural blueprints used in building trades to make estimates for material lists and labour requirements.
- Must have the ability and understanding of the operation of shop tools and equipment. Must be physically fit and able to go to any part of the campus including roofs and crawlspace.
- Must have the ability to train and supervise employees.
- Must have the ability to deal with staff effectively to ensure the work is completed efficiently within the constraints of the Collective Agreement.
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
