Protective Care Support Worker

Main Street Project offers Protective Care to our community through the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act (IPDA), which supports intoxicated individuals into sobriety using a harm reduction approach, close monitoring, and a supported release. We aim to serve each person with safe and respectful services, following an initial transfer by Winnipeg Police Service officers or cadets.
In accordance with Main Street Project’s mission, goals, policies and procedures, the Protective Care Support Worker functions as a member of a team in providing services designed to assist and support marginalized individuals in meeting their basic needs, and to ensure their safety and well-being.
**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Coordinate intakes for community members entering Protective Care, adhering to established protocols and working with external partners
- Conduct and document assessments every 15 minutes for individuals in Protective Care including the monitoring respirations and other physical signs of their current condition. Ensure they receives medical attention when required
- Assist participants in planning, problem-solving, and addressing immediate needs, including providing food, water, clothing and other items.
- Document and manage Community Member’s belongings from intake to discharge adhering to established procedures
- Coordinate supportive discharge of community members including evaluation of psychosocial determining factors
- Provide support and resources without judgement for participants accessing Protective Care
- Respond to emergency situations; assessing, intervening, and documenting critical incidents requesting assistance when needed or when incident escalates beyond scope of role
- Ensure participants are informed of internal and external resources, services, and programs and if needed
- Ensure care provided meets professional standards
- Work collaboratively with external partners
- Maintain accurate and confidential electronic and file records
- Collect and submit agency-required statistics on time and with accuracy
- Maintain cleanliness of the program area by following routine cleaning schedules each shift
**QUALIFICATIONS**
- Relevant experience working in the field of human services preferably with adults experiencing homelessness, mental health and substance use issues
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to build and maintain relationships with external partners
- Compassion for working with individuals who use substances and experience mental health issues
- Post secondary education in the field of addictions and mental health is considered an asset
- Ability to work with a client-centred care philosophy
- Knowledge of the effects of poverty and the determinants to health
- Ability to work collaboratively in a mutli-disciplinary team
- Knowledge of Indigenous Culture and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action
- Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills, both oral and written
- An understanding/experience in working with culturally diverse populations
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office & online databases
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Clear Vulnerable Sector Search and a Clear Adult Abuse Registry Check are required. Employee is responsible for any service charges incurred
**CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT**
- Ability to stand or walk for long periods of time. Physical tasks include crouching, bending, lifting, reaching and first aid for participants
- Ability to work with individuals who use substances and/or experience mental health issues
