Egg Farmers of Canada (EFC) is presently seeking a Field Inspector located in British Columbia to join our Operations team. Reporting to the Supervisor, Field Operations, the primary responsibilities of the role include executing audits, delivering educational programs, and acting as an ambassador of EFC in British Columbia.
**Duties and responsibilities**:
- Conduct on-farm inspections to verify the number of hens in a given facility, to ensure compliance with Good Management Practices, and to confirm the reported hen inventory count.
- Conduct audits for EFC’s national on-farm food safety program, Start Clean-Stay Clean® (SC-SC), which includes helping the farmers better understand the program.
- Conduct audits for EFC’s Animal Care Program (ACP), which includes taking measurements of housing systems, determining housing densities, feeder space, water availability and hen condition, and reporting the results in the required format.
- Build strong relationships with farmers and provincial egg boards.
- Assist in conducting inventory audits at the egg board to ensure accurate inventories are reported on a timely basis.
- Participate in seminars and courses related to field inspection and the agriculture industry.
- May be requested to visit stakeholders outside of one’s territory to conduct a site visit or other duties related to the job.
Occasional Activities
- Verify compliance by: visiting grading stations and breaking plants; monitoring storage conditions and quality of product purchased by EFC; inspecting for proper documentations and labeling; and, verifying that the product is processed at the plant and not re-sold.
- Meet with grading/breaking industry management and staff to resolve issues as they arise
- Meet with Interprovincial License holders upon request.
- Occasionally, liaise with allied trades (e.g. hatcheries and feed organizations) and their management in matters related to biosecurity and food safety.
Administrative Activities
- Provide insights and information that will be incorporated into presentations for various stakeholders.
- Manage work schedule by coordinating on-farm visits and office work.
- Complete expense and activity reports on a weekly basis.
- Maintain information on farmers in assigned territory.
**Qualifications and Skills**
- Specialized knowledge of HACCP-based food safety programs and auditing principles.
- Knowledge of food safety risks and regulations (Federal, Provincial and Local), EFC policies (egg regulations under the Safe Food for Canadians Act and the Recommended Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Poultry), proper on-farm procedures, poultry/agriculture industry and related fields.
- Knowledge in rodent control, bacteriology, biosecurity, feed supplements and water safety may be required depending on the province.
- Knowledge of EFC’s various products, policies, services and programs (e.g. industrial products and marketing initiatives).
- Knowledge of relevant EFC policies and procedures.
- Ability to follow effective audit procedures (e.g. formation of non-leading questions).
- Ability to identify policy risks and provide recommendations.
- Strong multi-tasking, organizational and administrative skills.
- Ability to drive in various weather conditions.
- Ability to work in various environments (cold, warm, dusty, wet).
- Ability to work in different time zones and different hours.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
**Education and Experience**:
- 2 - 3 years of Specialized Community College education in poultry/agriculture
- Must have completed auditing courses
- 2 - 5 years experience in the agriculture industry
