Olds College Lacombe, Alberta location is looking for a temporary (4 month) Seasonal Research Assistant. e research assistant is part of a technical team that supports cereal crop research at a large and diverse research Centre. Under the direction of the senior technical staff, performs routine plot maintenance, fieldwork, and lab duties based on existing guidelines. Provide assistance to permanent technical staff executing their duties and responsibilities. The primary focus of the position is with the Cereal Forage program; however, the job impacts multi-disciplinary research teams at the Centre providing general support to all areas.

**Key Job Functions**:

- Provide technical assistance collecting and processing forage samples.
- Routine farm maintenance, mowing roadways, trimming fence-lines, moving irrigation pipes, and cleaning equipment and supplies.
- Provide support to harvest operations, assisting with combine crews, and operation of binding and stationary threshing equipment. Other harvest methods used will be cutting of plant material and individual head selection.
- Assist with the weighing, cleaning, and testing of all harvested research trials.
- Assist in seed lab activities collecting 1000KWT, bushel weight and % plump
- Provide general support to all areas of the cereal breeding program.

**Education/Experience/Skills/Knowledge Required**:

- Requires minimum High School education.
- The ability to follow safe work practices and procedures.
- The ability to operate small horsepower tractors, string trimmers and other grounds maintenance equipment is desirable.
- The ability to work outdoors in varying environmental conditions, exposure to noise, grain dust, pollen, and lift upwards of 50 lbs for extended periods during harvest.
- The ability to work within a team, follow protocols set out by senior technical and scientific staff and seek clarification when needed is required.
- The job requires attention to detail and the ability to identify and remove plant variants.
- Basic computer skills for data collection and entry.

**Conditions of Employment**:

- Must be physically fit and have the ability to lift 50lbs and work extended periods in all, non-adverse weather conditions.
- Some work outside of regular College operating hours will be required.
- Current Criminal Reference check that is free of any offenses.
- Must respect and actively promote health and safety policies.
- Valid First-Aid Level C CPR is desirable.
- A valid Class 5 Driver’s License is required.
