**About the Field Crop Development Centre**

The Field Crop Development Centre (FCDC) is located in Lacombe, Alta. and has been developing enhanced cereal varieties for feed, forage, malt, food and bio-industrial uses since 1972. Recognized as a world-class research facility, FCDC focuses on producing new barley and triticale varieties, as well as maintaining a vast source of germplasm.

**The Opportunity - Cereal Pathology Seasonal Worker (July to December)**

This is a seasonal position in plant pathology and stationed at Lacombe, Alberta as part of a multidisciplinary team. Major responsibilities will include assistance with field operations and some laboratory work under the supervision of the pathology research associate. Emphasis will be placed on assistance in the areas of screening for cereal disease resistance in field nurseries and research activities in the greenhouse and field, along with disease surveys. Assistance in other areas such as seeding and harvesting is required for the breeding programs.

**Key Job Functions**:

- Should have basic experience to work in a microbiology laboratory. Will help to prepare media and solutions, pathogen culture maintenance and inoculum production.
- Assist with plot maintenance and irrigation system set-up. Must be able to help inoculate field plots multiple times in the evening.
- Assist with cereal disease surveys across central Alberta. Will help to assess disease resistance and other traits.
- Will help with harvesting, seed cleaning and proper storage of pathogen and plant samples.
- Maintenance of growth chamber materials and lab cultures. Responsible for helping purify and multiplicate fungal cultures in vivo and vitro.
- Ensure use of universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from hazardous materials.
- Assist the breeding program with seeding, data collection, harvesting, and general plot maintenance.

**Education/Experience/Skills/Knowledge Required**:

- Applicable post-secondary training to program/s in which support is provided.
- Ability to operate and safely handle small field implements, tools and horsepower equipment is desirable.
- Strong computer skills
- Adept communication and problem-solving abilities
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to work on a team
- Work independently with mínimal supervision

**Conditions of Employment**:

- May be required to do heavy lifting, repetitive physical work and work in adverse weather conditions.
- Some work outside of regular College operating hours may be required.
- Must be able to frequently travel during the workday.
- Current Criminal Reference check that is free of any offenses.
- Must respect and actively promote health and safety policies.
