Job Summary

The Organizational Development and Learning (ODL) Specialist works within Student Housing and Community Services (SHCS). SHCS resides in the Vice-President, Students (VPS) portfolio, and focuses on creating an exceptional UBC student experience. SHCS is made up of seven different services on campus: Child Care, Food Services, Residence Life and Administration, Conferences and Accommodation, Parking, Bookstore & Campus Mail, Facilities and Building Services and five support units consisting of Occupational Health and Safety, Marketing and Communications, Information Technology, Finance, and Human Resources. This position contributes to the creation and delivery of an exceptional SHCS staff experience.

In partnership with SHCS departments and the Associate Director, Organizational Development and Learning, the ODL Specialist develops and delivers organizational development initiatives in alignment with the University’s Strategic Plan and unit level strategic and business plans. This will include conducting survey delivery, assessment and reporting, providing team coaching, and partnering with stakeholders on the design, development, implementation and delivery of high-quality learning programs.

Organizational Status
The ODL Specialist reports to the Associate Director, ODL. Works closely with senior staff in the delivery and/or organization of training and certifications as well as other Human Resources staff in SHCS and VPS. The ODL Specialist works with a wide variety of staff in SHCS through the development and implementation of a variety of organizational and people development initiatives.

Work Performed
- Develops and manages strategic partnerships with the SHCS leadership team while leading change management and organizational design initiatives that foster organization learning.
- Develops and implements change management and organizational design initiatives that foster organization learning and address SHCS’s strategic goals and needs.
- Responsible for implementing a variety of organizational development initiatives for SHCS within the overall context of the University’s Strategic Plan and departmental strategic and business plans.
- Responsible for implementing SHCS People Plan initiatives, measuring their success, and adjusting as needed.
- Assesses and determines the value/effectiveness of organization development and training programs. Identifies areas of performance improvement, and develops programs to influence performance change.
- Develops and curates training sessions and courses for managers and supervisors. Develops strategies to collect feedback and measures learning development outcomes.
- Partners with stakeholders to identify training needs and to propose innovative and audience appropriate learning solutions.
- Responsible for overseeing online workplace learning within SHCS. Supports departments in their use Canvas Catalog, Canvas, Workday and related processes. Builds upon SHCS’s use of UBC’s online learning platform.
- Coaches managers to develop and enhance their leadership skills. Provides coaching for SHCS teams and groups.
- Responsible for encouraging departmental information sharing through the oversight and maintenance of the SHCS Intranet. Maintains and advises on change management related to operational intranets.
- Evaluates and advises on the improvement of onboarding and orientation processes for new staff to ensure alignment with best practices for early and sustained engagement.
- Engages with staff on a regular basis to assess their progress and experience of organizational design initiatives and to promote integration of SHCS departments.
- Observes training and provides feedback to trainers.
- Works with departments to improve efficiencies through business process reengineering.
- Advances UBC’s and SHCS’s commitment to practices of equity, diversity and inclusion through inclusive learning methods and practices.
- Works in a collaborative and inclusive manner, fostering equitable experiences and a respectful environment for all staff, faculty, students and key stakeholders.
