**Position Summary**:

JIBC’s Health & Safety Specialist has broad impact and accountability, supporting a unique post-secondary institute. As a key partner you will participate in developing, implementing, coordinating, and administering a comprehensive health and safety program, helping to tailor and manage policies and procedures to the specific needs of this workplace. You will be responsible for facilitating compliance with occupational health & safety regulatory requirements and guidelines by supporting safe work practices and training, embedding a focus on prevention and root cause analysis, and developing a sensitivity for potential dangers. The overall goal is to support and maintain a healthy and safe work and learning environment. This role is part of a small Health, Safety and Emergency Management (HSEM) team, within our People & Culture group.
Key areas of focus:
- Ensure the day-to-day function of the JIBC Safety Program (eg: administering the Safety program policies; maintaining and communicating applicable documentation; supporting performance measures and reporting on health and safety program results and trends) and monitor and evolve it to ensure compliance with local, provincial & federal regulations.
- Manage the First Aid Program and supervise designated staff in performance of First Aid function in addition to their regular duties.
- Provide both proactive and situational advice to all levels of the organization to promote a safety culture and encourage engagement in safety initiatives
- Author, train, roll-out and administer safety standards, programs and procedures
- Manage hazard control programs (engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment), safe work procedures, hazard communication and SDS programs.
- Coordinate the necessary planning, due diligence, and quality controls to identify and mitigate OH&S risks. Conduct proactive Risk Assessments and maintain Safety Risk Register and prioritize opportunities for improvements.
- Facilitate the Joint Health & Safety Committee, ensuring effective meeting minutes are kept and driving actions through to completion.
- Ensure safety inspections and audits are conducted, and ensure that corrective actions have been taken whenever safety deficiencies have been identified.
**Qualifications & Requirements**:
**Academic/Certications**:
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field from a recognized post-secondary institution; OHS degree, diploma, or certificate preferred;
- Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation is preferred;
- Any of the following designations are also assets:
Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST); Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC); Certified Emergency Planner (CEP)
- Supervisory experience in a safety sensitive environment is an asset
**Experience**:
Experience typically gained in three to five years of Occupational Health and Safety specific roles;
OR an appropriate combination of experience and education
Including:
- well-versed in local, provincial, and federal Health and Safety regulations and standards, including but not limited to BC OHSR, BC Fire Code, CSA and NFPA standards
- experience liaising with Health and Safety regulatory authorities including WorkSafe BC and Technical Safety BC
- excellent influencing, and communication skills, with the ability to obtain buy-in from multiple stakeholders
- excellent problem solver with keen investigation and analytical skills, proactive in identifying the root cause of issues to develop the right solutions
- demonstrated ability to model a high level of professionalism and ethics, and to maintain the discretion and confidentiality required by this role
