Job Summary

The Dr. Cullis Laboratory, in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of British Columbia will be looking to hire a Research Assistant/Technician 1 to join the team.

The base project and work will center around developing novel LNP RNA formulations as vaccines or therapeutics for bacterial infections in humans; these drugs will be agnostic to antimicrobial resistance - a key emerging health threat in all parts of the world.

Organizational Status
The Technician 1 will report jointly to the post-doctoral fellows Dr. Ehsan Dezfouli, Dr. Muzamil Khan, and Dr. Olga Pacios, assisting with routine lab assays such as ELISA, qPCR etc., generating LNP formulations, and other related tasks. Assigned tasks and timelines will be determined collaboratively by all supervisors.

Work Performed- Run wet lab assays including RT-qPCR, ELISA, western blots, HDL and LDL-cholesterol, and other similar benchwork as required- Formulate LNP RNA and perform standard characterizations, including sizing (DLS), encapsulation efficiency (Ribo-green) and other assays- Process murine in vivo tissue samples for routine analyses- Culture bacterial isolates for use in in vivo models- Analyse sequencing data as appropriate- Participate in lab group meetings and regular meetings with supervisors, including presenting data and engaging in routine discussions for getting direction and feedback- Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Failure to maintain a high standard of work with consistent communication between team members and the supervisors will result in delays and quality of research output, which may impact the working conditions, reputation, and funding for the research group and UBC.

Works under direct supervision in accordance with detailed oral or written instructions; routine duties are carried out under general supervision.

Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation and a minimum one year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications- BSc in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or similar.- Track record of laboratory work, with a preference of 4+ months of technician work within a research lab- Experience in microscopy, molecular biology techniques (RT PCR, cloning etc.), and LNP formulation- Strong record-keeping and communication skills- Quality writing skills an asset- Self motivated, strong team player
