Job Summary
Organizational Status
Reports to Scientific Director, Environmental Health Services at the BC Centre for Disease Control, who is also a Professor (Partner) at the UBC School of Population and Public Health. Works closely with other investigators, research staff, and graduate trainees working on the same group of projects at SFU, UBC, BCCDC, and other partner agencies
Work Performed
- Prepares exposure and health outcomes data for epidemiologic analyses.
- Conducts epidemiologic analyses.
- Conducts literature review.
- Assists in the writing and preparation of scientific manuscripts.
- Assists in the preparation of scientific and knowledge translation presentations.
- Attends regular project meetings.
- Engages with other project partners.
- Identifies issues with project and suggests solutions.
- Develops timelines to ensure tasks are completed on time, reports on progress, and troubleshoots to ensure deadlines are met.
- May be asked to participate in other ongoing studies.
- Any other duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Due to the use of administrative health data, this individual must understand and exemplify the ethics of confidentiality, sensitivity, and respect when communicating all study information. The Research Assistant must be exceptionally detail-orientated and organized and able to follow detailed instructions. They must be able to prioritize tasks to ensure that time-sensitive duties are completed in priority. This person must also be self-directed, able to excel in a team environment, know personal limitations and take initiative to ask for assistance when needed.
Supervision Received
Work under general supervision of the Scientific Director or delegate, receiving detailed instructions on the assignment of new duties and oversight thereafter. The incumbent should be able to identify circumstances that require consultation with the supervisor or other team members and be able to seek out that consultation when needed to advance project objectives.
Supervision Given
This position may oversee and direct some work done by graduate research trainees or other, more less experienced staff working on the project
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced knowledge of R, Python, or other coding language for public health analytics.
- Some knowledge of quantitative research methods applicable to health research.
- Some knowledge about climate change and environmental exposures, such as wildfire smoke and extreme heat.
- Effective use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook at an intermediate level.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to effectively prioritize tasks, adapt to changing priorities, multi-task and meet deadlines.
- Ability to learn new software, research methods, and work routines.
- Ability to exercise appropriate tact, discretion and confidentiality in all matters.
- Ability to exercise sound judgement, responsibility, and maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work effectively independently and within a collaborative team environment.
