The Opportunity

The R&D and Analytical Technician provides scientific and technical support to the applied research sector of the company or the Analytical group. The R& D and Analytical Technician will set up and carry out routine laboratory assignments under the general supervision of scientist or supervisor.

**Responsibilities**:
- Assist in setting up and conducting experiments, development of new methods, tests and analyses.- Perform routine sample analysis, and analysis/processing of incoming materials, oils, seeds, etc. with a high level of accuracy. Collect and record data; observe and summarize routine results in a timely manner. Organize data for incorporation into reports. Occasional off-shift sample analyses and reporting (overtime paid).- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment and apparatus and prepare solutions and sample formulations. Ensure the laboratory and equipment is clean, well organized and in good working order.- Monitor inventory levels; coordinate with Sr. Tech having responsibility for coordinating lab requisitions for the purchasing of supplies and lab equipment.- Assist in training and guidance to other technical staff on equipment and processes.- May be assigned activity from the next classification level as on-the-job training with a view to advancing responsibilities and furthering personal growth and development.- Conduct R&D research projects under direct supervision of project leaders.

Experience- Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Food Science, Biology, Agriculture, or a Technical diploma coupled with 3-5 years of laboratory experience in the food or related industry.- 2 - 3 years of experience working in a laboratory and performing physical chemical analyses- Troubleshooting and problem-solving experience with laboratory equipment.- Familiar with using several laboratory equipment/instruments, as well as knowing their calibrations and validations- Able to operate various instrumental methods of analysis- Knowledge of first aid/CPR is an asset.- Knowledge of chemicals and safety (WHMIS) is required.- Working knowledge of Word and Excel; ability to learn specialized in-house programs.- Knowledge of Good Laboratory Practice principles.- Problem solving and troubleshooting skills; analytical abilities and strong attention to detail.- Ability to work under direct supervision initially, advancing to working independently.- Strong technical aptitude and commitment to ongoing professional development.- Team player; able to work effectively in a team environment and assist other areas as required.- Understand the needs of other people and the urgency in meeting project deadlines.- Good communication skills, oral and written.- Initiative to improve technical skills on an ongoing basis.

Work Environment- Exposed to organic solvents, hazardous wastes.- Risk of chemical vapours which are used at any given time for extraction and compressed gases (R& D more; Analytical on a smaller scale).- High pressure processes.- The nature of the business and work environment may affect individuals who are prone to allergies.- Light to moderate lifting on an occasional basis, i.e. up to 10 or 20 kilos;- Extended periods of standing or sitting.
