**Position Purpose**:
The Director, Indigenous Initiatives plays a pivotal role in establishing meaningful, reciprocal relationships with Indigenous Peoples, nations, communities, and organizations. It ensures cultural safety and collaborative partnerships that support IO’s commitment to Truth and Reconciliation and the evaluation of its response to the TRC Calls to Action. The incumbent leads open communication channels and collaborates with IO leadership and Ministry partners to advise on Indigenous engagement, relations, and programming. These efforts directly impact IO projects and Indigenous communities.
**What You Will Do**:

- Develop and lead Indigenous engagement models and consultation plans focused on collaboration and open dialogue.
- Provide strategic and operational leadership to the Indigenous Relations team
- Build and maintain effective relationships with Indigenous communities, organizations, and government partners to identify risks, opportunities, and solutions.
- Partner with internal teams and Procurement to grow Indigenous supplier relationships and support the use of Indigenous vendors. This will include reviewing and enhancing IO’s Indigenous Engagement Participation Program.
- Support internal education and awareness initiatives that promote cultural safety and understanding of Indigenous histories and perspectives.
- Collaborate with IO teams to integrate Indigenous engagement strategies into project planning and execution.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of Indigenous initiatives and provide recommendations for continuous improvement.

**What We Are Looking For**:

- Significant experience in Indigenous engagement, community relations, and strategic planning.
- Demonstrated ability to be client-facing and effectively manage relationships with Indigenous communities, organizations, and government partners in support of initiatives related to engagement, consultation, procurement, and reconciliation across Ontario.
- Knowledge and appreciation of Indigenous reconciliation, including the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.
- Experience navigating government decision-making processes and working in and/ or with various levels of government and its leadership.
- Expertise in strategic communications, planning, and issues management.
- Strong creative problem-solving and organizational skills to develop innovative approaches to Indigenous community relations.
- Ability to manage emerging and sensitive issues and proactively develop strategic management plans.
- Effective communicator with a demonstrated ability to promote cooperation and build partnerships.
- Relevant professional learnings that demonstrate competencies in Indigenous relations, strategic planning, and stakeholder engagement.
