**Job Summary**: Reporting to the Associate Director, Neighbourhood & Youth Services, the incumbent is responsible for the overall patron experience through supervision, organization and administration of a functional area in the library. Responsible for leading and implementing the Library’s strategic goals and priorities in Community Library Services, and providing leadership to staff in contributing to the success of the Library as a whole. Demonstrates and sets expectations for the conduct of staff that adhere to the library’s policies and procedures in accordance with the Library’s vision, mission and values.

The incumbent is part of the leadership team for Neighbourhood Services and works collaboratively within the team and system wide to ensure that service priorities are met. The incumbent employs community development techniques to better understand community needs and address systemic barriers to accessing library services for socially excluded communities.

The incumbent is responsible for the development and coordination of system wide staff training and resources on community engagement and providing library services with a community-led focus.

The incumbent works closely with branches and other functional areas such as Information Services, Circulation Services, Children & Teen Services, Programming & Learning, and Human Resources, as well as the community to ensure that VPL’s services are responsive to our patrons’ diverse needs and interests and that staff are prepared to deliver services.

**Job Requirements**:
**Education/Qualifications**:

- Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited library school.
- Completion of supervisory courses.

**Experience**:

- Demonstrated supervisory and/or leadership experience.
- Experience in the provision of library services including programming, information services, working with the community, and collection management.
- Considerable experience working in one or more of the following areas:

- Indigenization, reconciliation, and decolonization
- Mental health, substance abuse and/or addiction
- Homelessness
- Immigrants, refugees, and newcomers
- Under-served individuals from culturally, socially, and economically excluded groups

**Knowledge, Skills & Abilities**:

- Ability to lead, coach and develop a staff team; excellent team-building and leadership skills.
- Thorough knowledge of current trends and industry best practices in areas of responsibility.
- Thorough understanding of library services, technologies and resources.
- Thorough understanding of the organization, its structure and roles, and strategic priorities.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, creatively, flexibly and exercise sound judgement.
- Resilience and comfort with uncertainty, awareness of self and others, cultural sensitivity, respect and empathy, active listening and humility.
- Strong commitment to serving clients; open, pragmatic and responsive to clients and community.
- Innovative and flexible in a rapidly changing library environment with the ability to assist staff to participate in and be open to change.
- Ability to proactively identify, initiate, and develop relationships with key organizations and promote the service area to the community and agencies
- Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as analytical and problem solving skills.
