THE OPPORTUNITY

Reporting to the Supervisor of Recreation Facilities, the Maintenance Service Worker performs semi-skilled manual work and operates vehicles and limited equipment in accomplishing all operations and maintenance tasks assigned in delivering the programs and services in the City of Spruce Grove Recreation Facilities. Employees in this position may occasionally be responsible for task coordination and are expected to promote a positive, secure, and safe work environment.

Probationary Rate: $29.93 per hour
Base Rate: $30.55 per hour
Developmental Rate: $31.31 per hour
Qualified Rate: $32.06 per hour

RESPONSIBILITIES

Core Functions:

- Undertake operational and preventative ice surface and ice plant maintenance.
- Undertake minor maintenance of light equipment, power, and hand tools, building systems, including janitorial.
- Provide assistance to the operators in administrative, preventative maintenance and planning functions.
- Provide staff monitoring, supervision, training and shift organization and reporting.
- Deal with day-to-day public relations in a courteous and professional manner.
- Operate light equipment and light motor vehicles to accomplish tasks.
- Perform work independently or on a crew; work is monitored by a supervisor or team leader to ensure adherence to safety regulations and meeting established work quality/productivity standards; monitor and coordinate assigned helpers in equal or lower positions; train junior and new staff.
- Work in accordance with Alberta Occupational Health and Safety regulations and City Safe Work Practices.
- Undertake other duties as assigned by supervisory staff as related to the effective and efficient operation of the arena or other City facilities or special events.

Team Leader Responsibilities:

- Coordinate, schedule, assign and direct labour, equipment, and materials to accomplish assigned tasks.
- Direct crew work in accordance with industry accepted practices and City procedures.
- Ensure crew work is in accordance with Alberta Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
- Review City Safe Work Practices, assess work site hazards and hold toolbox meetings at the start of every task or project, prepare toolbox meeting reports; prepare incident reports; ensure no worker starts work on the site that

has not been through a safety briefing or toolbox meeting.
- Ensure that daily inspection/lubrication/minor maintenance of utilized vehicles and equipment is undertaken before utilization, report deficiencies.
- Communicate instructions in clear terms; treat all employees equitably and without favour or bias.
- Report actions that may be cause for employee discipline to supervisor.
- Handle on-site public inquiries in a courteous manner, refer inquiries to supervisor when response not certain.
- Organize work timelines to least interfere with public use of assets.
- Order materials in a timely manner to ensure the continuous functioning of the crew.
- Coordinate implementation of small construction projects that include outsourced services.
- Ensure that established work quality/productivity/time standards are met.
- Train staff new to the task to be fully competent in their activities.
- Promote a positive, secure, and safe work environment among co-workers.

Other Duties
- Understand and adhere to City policies, procedures, and standards, whether written or implied, as amended from time to time.
- Contribute to a positive safety culture by always acting in a safe manner and complying with City safety policies and procedures for staff and contractors.
- Engages appropriate support from supervisor, and/or Enforcement Services, when required, to ensure safety of facility, other patrons, other staff, and self.
- Documents and records all incidents and facility damage.
- Follows all City standards and legislation related to respectful behaviour, FOIPP and other policies and procedure.
- Act as a steward of the City's Corporate Culture by following the “Values, We Live By”.
- Perform other job-related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

- High School Diploma.
- Minimum of one (1) year of maintenance, or custodial related experience in a public building operation.
- AARFP Arena Operator Level 1 Certificate or equivalent.
