**Position Title: Chief Executive Officer (CEO)**

**Responsible to**:Board of Directors

**General Position Description**
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is the senior leadership position at the Ontario Waste Management Association (OWMA). The CEO is appointed by the Board of Directors (‘the Board’), within the scope and limitations of the OWMA bylaws and is responsible to the Board for the total operation of OWMA and for the implementation of OWMA’s strategic vision, mission, objectives, and priorities as approved by the Board.

The waste management sector is undergoing significant change and the CEO will guide the association through the change and provide leadership to identify, build support for, represent and advocate for the immediate and long-term interests of OWMA members and Ontario’s waste management sector, while overseeing the development and delivery of support programs aimed at ensuring a successful and prosperous sector.

**Key Responsibilities**
Within the policies established by the Board, the CEO is responsible for the leading, building, organizing, planning, and delivering all OWMA functions:
**Strategic sector leadership**
- Representing and advocating for the immediate and long-term interests of the membership and the waste management sector.
- Delivering on membership value and growing a vibrant membership.
- Monitoring sector trends, identifying sector advancement opportunities, and providing timely advice to the Board and the sector including on trends, emerging challenges, advocacy opportunities, policy issues, program changes, and business/economic opportunities.
- Reviewing and assessing the needs of the sector recognizing changing conditions and developments in the waste management sector and providing leadership in informing the Board with recommendations for action where appropriate.
- Transparent, proactive, and effective communications to and engagement with members, government partners’ stakeholder organizations, and the public.
- Acts as the OWMA spokesperson to government, media, and the public.
- Compelling communication style, ability to influence and gain agreement from divergent viewpoints.
- Strong networking and collaboration skills.
- Fostering and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the association and industry.

**Support to the Board of Directors as the governing body of OWMA**
- Providing information and leadership, which enable the Board to set the OWMA strategic direction, approve key policies and program designs, and monitor management’s operations and strategic progress.
- Establishing and maintaining a multi-year strategic and operational planning process with goals and performance measures and ongoing evaluation and quarterly reporting to the Board of Directors.
- Keeping the Board apprised of emerging issues and management’s response to those issues in a timely manner and proposing/recommending new strategies, policies, programs, and other initiatives for the Board’s consideration.
- Acting as liaison between OWMA and all levels of government with a focus on the provincial government and key Ministries.
- Ensuring that all OWMA funds are employed in a manner that reflect high standards of accountability and transparency, in accordance with Board policy.
- Communicating the OWMA strategic direction and implementation progress adequately and regularly to members, sector stakeholders, government partners, the public, and staff.
- Ensuring the orientation of new Board members.

**Operational Management**
- Establishing and maintaining the organizational and operational capacity of OWMA to deliver on its mandate.
- Manage the membership in a manner that creates value for members through advocacy, conflict resolution, maximizes advice and support and promotes membership retention and new member engagement.
- Ensuring the effective, efficient, and transparent management and delivery of OWMA programs, services, and business activities.
- Ensuring that OWMA financial resources are properly managed and deployed, appropriate auditing and accountability mechanisms are in place, and legal validation is deployed on challenging issues.
- Building and maintaining a recognized capacity to produce quality strategy and advocacy, public policy positions, sector research and data collection including securing the necessary data, information, and analytical capabilities.
- Managing in a manner that encourages staff engagement and development and ensuring succession planning.
- Ensuring that the professional development of OWMA staff is provided for in accordance with Board policies.
