**Job Summary**
- The Faculty of Agriculture, Dalhousie University is a small research-intensive campus located in Truro, NS. Offering technical, undergraduate and graduate programs in agriculture, environment and related life and social science disciplines, the Faculty of Agriculture educates future leaders and generates knowledge and innovative solutions for healthy, sustainable societies. Reporting to the Animal Science & Aquaculture (ASA) Department Chair and to the Aquatron Director, the Aquaculture Manager will oversee the operations of the Faculty’s Aquaculture Center as it grows to fulfill its mission to be an academically rigorous and globally significant leader in sustainable aquaculture systems.
**Key Responsibilities**
- Manage the facility’s day-to-day operations including the scheduling of people, resources and activities. Develop, implement, and maintain policies and procedures in consultation with the Department Chair and the Aquatron Director.
- Ensure all risks are managed appropriately and regulatory requirements are met to mitigate risk to people, animals, the environment and equipment. Ensure all practices and procedures are carried out in accordance with bio-security requirements and standards of animal care.
- Manage and control facility security. Ensure compliance with University and regulated health and safety requirements. Ensure facility is maintained in good operating order, overseeing required maintenance, renovations and equipment replacement.
- Manage NSGEU, student and casual staff.Make recommendations to develop short, medium and long-term financial goals for the facility. Compile data for budget preparation and projections, and advise on budget implications. Implement and administer appropriate user fees to offset operating costs.
- Support academic teaching programs. Work closely with faculty members to identify and implement opportunities to integrate academic programs into the aquaculture operations, including laboratory exercises.
- Support research activities. Serve on the Animal Care and Use Committee and as an advocate and resource for graduate students regarding facility/technical needs. Develop budgets, protocol and service agreements/contracts for industry supported research.
**Note**
- This position will be required to respond to after-hour calls including call-ins to campus as required based on issues arising.
Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.
**Required Qualifications**
- Undergraduate degree in relevant field (e.g. Science, Agriculture, or Engineering) plus approximately five years progressive relevant experience (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
- Experience in an aquaculture research facility with a focus on fin fish.
- Supervisory experience as well as experience in change and project management.
- Demonstrated organizational and problem-solving skills, and the proven ability to balance multiple projects in a fluid, busy work environment.
- Strong communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
- Proven success creating and maintaining a safe work environment for people and animals.
**Assets**
- Masters degree in relevant field (e.g. Science, Agriculture, or Engineering).
- Experience supervising in a unionized environment.
