Summary:
Reporting to the Manager, Food Services and in accordance with Ballenas Housing Society (Ballenas) mission, strategic direction, principles and policies, the Line Cook’s primary responsibilities are to prepare food to exact specifications, set up stations for menu and assist the Manager and Sous Chef with their daily tasks.

The Line Cook is committed to working with vulnerable client groups in a friendly, accommodating, and respectful manner, and acts responsibly when issues arise outside of regular duties.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities Based on Key Competencies:
Problem Solving/Judgement

Prepare, cook and assemble dishes, including but not limited to, sauces, garnishes, and vegetables as indicated by recipes; ensure quality and freshness of ingredients, utilize appropriate portion control to minimize waste

Perform assigned tasks with speed and accuracy; complete additional related tasks as requested by Manager/Sous Chef

Commitment to Safe Work Practices

Follow all WorkSafeBC regulations, Ballenas policies and safety procedures, and equipment and cleaning product instructions; observe all security protocols regarding alarms, locks and emergency procedures

Ensure kitchen stations are kept in a clean, sanitary and orderly condition, and that all prep areas and equipment are maintained and properly sanitized; properly manage any leftover food

Comply with sanitation and food safety plans, adhere to highest standards of maintaining cleanliness and appearance, utilize task-appropriate personal protective clothing and equipment such as gloves, hair restraints, facemasks

Complete and submit incident reports to the Manager/Sous Chef in the event of any injury or accident

Teamwork and Client Service

Maintain cooperative working relationships with kitchen staff and management; answer, report to, and follow instructions from the Manager/Sous Chef; act as back-up support, including directing kitchen staff, during Manager/Sous Chef absences

Cook menu items in cooperation with kitchen staff ensuring high quality food prepared in a timely fashion

Maintain professional communications and interactions with residents to ensure excellence in service delivery; utilize effective information seeking and active listening skills to enhance understanding and provide appropriate responses; respect tenant rights including privacy and confidentiality

Personal Effectiveness

Initiate and carry out a diverse range of duties with limited supervision; work efficiently to manage tasks, time and resources

Set up, stock and organize kitchen stations with all necessary supplies; maintain appropriate inventory

Commitment to well-being of self and others through adherence to Ballenas and other regulatory policies and practices; immediately report non-compliant conditions to the Manager/Sous Chef

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- 1 year in a culinary program preferred, plus 2 years’ experience as a cook or prep cook in a commercial kitchen using a wide variety of cooking methods, ingredients, and procedures
- Experience meeting heavy and fast paced physical demands
- Proven experience in the safe and appropriate use of kitchen equipment

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
- Sound knowledge of safe work practices including relevant WorkSafeBC requirements and responsibilities, current public health, hygiene and food handling safety practices and procedures
- Ability to follow recipes, use standardized ingredients and meet expectations for the distribution of food products
- Superior organizational, prioritization and time management abilities
- Excellent communication and listening skills; effective interpersonal, teamwork and conflict resolution abilities; ability to remain calm while performing multiple tasks in a demanding environment

WORKING CONDITIONS
- Standing or walking throughout entire work shift
- Frequent lifting and moving of objects up to 20 kg
- Noisy and fast-paced work environment

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Passing a Criminal Record/Vulnerable Sector Check
- Food Safe Level 1 certification
- CPR/First Aid Certification an asset
- WHMIS (GHS) Certification
- Clean driving record and access to reliable vehicle

**Job Types**: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: From $20.00 per hour

Expected hours: 35 - 40 per week
